i wasn't aware of a smallmouth contest on here, nor do i carry a lighter with me or even own one, but here's a nice picture of the big guy. This is the closest i've ever been to a state record fish (only 1lbs 11oz short)

this smallie weighed 5lbs 7oz on our digital scale which is the same scale that weighed my buddies 8lbs 9oz lake hopatcong record before it was confirmed at dow's bait and tackle by the knee deep club the other week so i know it's accurate.

caught it using my friends homemade fly he calls the green hammer haha. fish was suspended in 30-40ft of water off a bit from the main school.

Nice fish dude. You mention "caught on a fly". Were you trolling with one of those deck arm contraptions with lead core?

nice fish man

i too would be interested to know more about how you got it down there with this technique. did you fight and land it on a flyrod too?

Definitely a pig, beauty of a fish. But why when measuring do people not start at the beginning of the tape measure? The tape measure does not start at the two inch mark. This is not the only fish I have seen measured here like that. sorry just venting!!!!

instead of trying to line it up perfect it's easier to do it like that then you can zoom in and put a straight edge on the mouth and tail and just do some simple math to get an exact measurement. Rather than trying to line it up perfectly at the tip and then when you zoom in you realize you were off by a quarter inch or whatever.

I was jigging the fly myself by hand but yeah i was trolling it, i was not fly fishing in that sense. We can tie our own flies, we just can't fly fish very effectively haha. We were actually fishing for trout so this was just an awesome surprise. She was released to maybe break the record one day in a few years!

i'm not trying to say this fish was 24" long because it's tail is there on the tape...the tail goes to about 24" and the mouth is at about 2. It was a 21.75" fish by zooming in and 5lbs 7oz on the digital scale. looked like 22 with the naked eye.
