Hello all - never really post in the freshwater section ( Lurker )
mostly in saltwater but need some help
Not looking for super secret spots - just something in general to take a 6 and 9 year old for a couple of hours. I know some of the basic spots but haven't really targeted anything in Union county in over 20 years (grew up fishing the rahway river in union by the old money store off of morris ave and the bridge in springfield on 22.)
Regardless I am looking to drop a couple of lines with my nephews ( this will be there first time fishing ever ) and just looking for a solid spot to take a couple of little guys fishing for the first time. Just looking for some action and get the nephews goin with fishing
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Thanks everyone

I don't know that area well but fall fishing can be a bit tough with the cooling water temps. I would definitely bring some worms so you catch them something, even if it is just little sunnies.
not sure where you are located in union but your best bets for kids fishing are probably milton, nomahegan, echo lake, in no particular order. theres another little lake in cranford that I don't think has name but if you google map its along the parkway, next to the river right at exit 136 and has shore access all around.

Used to do well at Rahway park pond this time of year. Medium shiners under a float by the Cherry blossom trees. You should get into Crappie and Bass with ease. Good luck!

Kids fishing derby at Echo Lake next week, Newark Bait and Flycasting Club, always do a nice job, would try there as there will be opportunity and Lorain activity with other kids around

I concur. Nomahegan has sunnies, bass, bullheads, carp, large shiners ( kids love these) and for now, trout, even though I can't catch them!
The pond near the second footbridge in Mohawk Park is good for kids, also.

Nomohegan is definitely a good choice. Fished there opening day and caught a few early. Not many people looked to be catching so there's probably plenty for your nephew :D . If he starts to get antsy you can always follow the trail back towards the river and see turtles frogs etc.

Update
First off thanks to everyone for all there suggestions
Took the boyz for there first ever fishing experience over to Echo lake early afternoon today , fished with worms , butter worms , power bait , salmon eggs and I even had a chance to throw a couple of phebes, mepps and lures = O-nada-zilcho nothing
I must give my nephews some props for there first time though , they stuck it out for 3 hours and started casting on there own like they have done it before . I was impressed , the little guy just kept trying and the older one got bored towards the end. Even have to give the wife props , she came to help out with the boyz , but once again they all fished hard with no complaints except towards the end , Why cant we catch any fish, nobody did who was there
There was 1 kid who came by and had a nice full stringer with 1- 20+ inch all rainbows , he said powerbait and lures did the job , the kid was fishing all morning and he was there the day before and caught nothing.
We fished next to a very nice lady who was there with her kids and she was part of the Newark Bait and tackle club who run the derby , she gave my nephews some free stuff and cant say enough about her and what the club does to run the derby. She said they stocked the crap out of it and some fish were caught yesterday and not much today. Nobody down the row caught anything all day.
It was a beautiful day, they enjoyed themselves and will go again
Thanks again to everyone for there help and will try again in a couple of weeks , might have to do a little solo-recon by myself - :D
