YEA BUDDY!!! Can I get a spell check? The date is October 3-5. Come one, come all! Oh yeah, you wana come up and watch your 6.6 ft Walmart rod and reel combo blow up? This is your chance. Early season the Salmon are nuts and the Chrome are right behind cleaning up the mess. You never know what can happen upstate on the tribs of Lake Ontario. Hell, my buddy Mike landed a 4 ft Sturgeon in Oswego last year. Damn thing was hooked right in the mouth. AMAZING!!! Blah, blah, blah, there just Trout, LOL! C'mon on up and test your skills. There just Trout, HUH! When's the last time you had a Salmon, Steelhead, Brown or Rainbow Trout spool you in 3 seconds flat? For you haters out there, you really don't know what the HELL your missing. Hoping to have a good turn out this year. Right now I have a possible 5-7 anglers rolling with me. Can I get an AMEN for SALMONOID SEASON? AMEN!!!!! Hope to see some of you brothers and possibly sisters up there. It's a great time. LETS GET EM!!!!!

For the guys that always say, " I wish I could make it"! Why can't you? Busy with work? Can't go because the wife is a BEAST! Kids have soccer, football, cheerleading or gymnastics? Life is tooooo short to say I can't. I know! A very good friend of mine passed away at the young age of 37 on July 4th of this year. Cause of death is unknown to this day. He didn't smoke, drink or do anything harmful to his body. The autopsy and toxicology report both came back NEGATIVE. My friend left behind a beautiful wife and 3 kids, 11, 5 and 4 years old. One of the most amazing families I've ever met and hung out with in my life is now heartbroken from this unexplainable tragedy. Maybe I'm out of line for posting this on a FUN THREAD. BUT, I have a point!!! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Maybe this, I don't know, I gotta ask the wife, who's gona watch the kids? C'mon man!!! You can be gone tomorrow! DO IT!!! Do it now! Life is short! Live it now before it's tooooooo LATE. NO EXCUSES!!!!!

AS ALWAYS................ TIGHT LINEZ!!!!!!! FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!:D

I would consider going up with you guys, but I'm floating the Big D with my dad that weekend. The trout may be smaller, but fishin' time with Dad trumps any jumbo salmon.

Good luck to all, hope those big salmon give you all shoulder tendonitis! :D

My buds and I will be hitting town on Sun morning for our usual week long outing. We fish from Sun. AM through Fri evening and get the hell outta Dodge first thing Sat morn as that's Columbus Day weekend, by far the absolute busiest weekend of the entire year up there, complete with the highest percentage of idiots, knuckleheads, and most outrageous drunks one could imagine. I'm often half tempted to stick around just for the entertainment but unfortunately I have to get home to hit the campground to close and winterize my camper.

I'll keep track of this thread to hopefully catch up with everyone sometime Sun morning!

DSR is nothing but an ex-politician still getting rich off of the people.

That aside there's plenty of river to fish w/o having folks in your back pocket. Ya just gotta go walk and explore. My friends and I very seldom have issues with crowding. Likewise most of the other anglers we do encounter and deal with are friendly and courteous and we extend the same attitude to everyone. It's no big deal to clear your line to allow someone to play and land a fish, or even offer to net it for them. And extending such goodwill generally elicits the same attitude in return. Whether they realize it or not most folks create their own luck, good or bad.
As the saying goes, karma can be a bitch, or not. Just fish and enjoy!

Anyone who's never tried it, you really should do your best to make it up there! The fishing is usually stellar, although occasionally it ventures into the realm of unbelievable!
The kings are like giant bulldogs just powering their way around the river. The big browns are another story too, but without question the steelies and to a slightly lesser degree the coho are the speed demon acrobats and by far the 'main attraction' of the whole circus IMHO! Drag screaming, reel smoking runs punctuated with incomparable aerial leaps, definitely the stars of the show!
Of course we can't forget the clowns too. Spend an hour sitting on ther bank having a sandwich and a brew at any of the most popular spots and you'll get to see some streamside antics the likes of which you simply couldn't imagine! Although I have to say it's not nearly as bad as it was many years ago when snagging was still legal. Back then fist fights over a lousy king were nearly as common as the sight of someone with a weighted treble hook impaled somewhere on their person.

All in all, after more than 30 years of fishing in the region up there and countless thousands of fish caught I still get excited and impatient as my annual weeklong trip approaches! By the time i'm halfway home at week's end I'm already planning for the following fall, not to mention trying to work in a spring steelhead trip before NJ trout season opens!

I hope as many guys as possible make it up for this outing! The timing should be great for hitting the peak of the salmon run and the early to mid stages of the steelhead influx!

Mike, biggest thing up there is you wanna fish light fluro leaders these fish see alot of crap thrown at them and are very line shy fish 8 an 10 for the salmon it may sound crazy but watch the locals and so called guides fishin 40 lb braid youll be amazed, also throw a fly sucker spawn sack anything!!!! Theres steelies and browns pushin through too dont throw a piece of sponge thats just silly! Remneber to have a good drift rod tip up follow the swing remeber these fish hold tight to the bottom so you wanna be on it not too much weight not to less find that happy medium where your drifting and you feel bottom evrey now and then if your not loosin weight and flys etc your not gonna catch em good luck man also line wise as a main line id go with like gamma 15 breaks at like thirty cast nice for ya!

bigboy5522
08-28-2014, 06:36 PM
Also a long rod is best like 9 or 10ft to protect those light leaders

$500 for a season pass (if that's what it is) or $50 for a day isn't cheap but the DSR gets it so that should tell you something. If you can afford it, it's worth fishing good water with fresh fish and less people in my opinion. If you've experienced the up river conditions during the salmon run, you know what I mean. Calling it a circus is an injustice to circuses. Don't mean to take away from this positive thread but what takes place on the beautiful Salmon River during the fall salmon run is nothing short of tragic!. It's a classic case of a few ruining it for the majority, although a few in this case is actually many. You'll never witness more fish being snagged and lack of sportsmanship in your life. Amazing how such a great fishery brings out the absolute worst in so many. It's bad enough to snag salmon, which is essentially impossible not to do, but when morons start snagging trophy browns and steel head, throw them on their stringers and drag them on the ground to their cars, no thank you. Absolutely pathetic behavior to witness. Make sure you have the DEC hotline number in your cell phone, you'll need it.

Like many on this board, I once enjoyed and looked forward to the salmon run. Unfortunately the carnage that takes place completely changed my views about that fishery. Truthfully it's no way for a great resource to be treated....truly pathetic. You'll know what I mean when you witness it. Having said that, the time to fish the river is when the leaves fall, the weather turns considerably colder and the idiots leave Pulaski. Early to mid November usually is that time frame which coincides with many more steel entering the river. You should start seeing the crowds diminish, especially after the Columbus Day weekend. If you value life, stay away from the river during Columbus Day. The steel head fishing on the Salmon River is world class and in my opinion second to none. There are years when you can say the same about the brown trout fishery. If you take time to learn the river and learn the techniques, you'll be rewarded with more fish of a lifetime than you could ever imagine. Truly trophy class fish. If you want to get rid of the crowds and have the gear, the Upper and Lower Fly Zones are as good as it gets. All C&R but you won't have to deal with the morons fishing with salt water surf rods spooled with 60 lb braid. a size 8/0 hook and a piece of sponge! Like I said, tragic to see a trophy 30 lb salmon, 10 lb brown or 15 lb steel head snagged in the ass, dragged up on the river bank, thrown on a stringer and dragged a half mile back to the car on asphalt!

Sorry to be a wet rag about the salmon run but wanted to forewarn anyone making the long drive up. As I initially said, if you can afford the DSR fee to get away from the carnage that takes place mid to upper river during the salmon run, I would highly recommend it if for no other reason than piece of mind.

I only live a few hours away from Pulaski, but NEVER go..
I wish my experiences were as pleasant as MikeyT's, but they have been the opposite..
The terrible sporstmanship, lifting, ultra foul language, rudeness I have witnessed, is set like a stone in my mind.. You could never bring a young son or daughter unless you don't mind him hearing a barrage of filthy language every time a fish is dropped... After those salmon become stream acclimated, they often stop hitting, and many guys using really good polarized glasses spot fish and actually drift the hook close to or right into the open mouth of the fish facing upstream , and lift them.. Its an art, and some guys are incredible at it, but those fish are STILL being snagged, just like decades ago.. Only difference is its more refined using sight and a delicate touch instead of a weighted treble.. I dunno, its not for me.. I prefer the solitude of the Finger Lakes and susquehanna river over the Pulaski circus.

To be fair, I DON'T know the secluded spots that some guys do, so I could have just been in the wrong places..
Also, things may be different these days Perhaps the hostility and rudeness is a thing of the past.. When I stopped going it was pretty bad, and I was disgusted. bob

I'm planning on going up that weekend. I probaly won't be able to fish with you guys because I'm disabled so places I can fish are limited. But, maybe I can stop by and say hey when you're coming or going to the river.

I've never been up there for Salmon but I used to go for Steelhead when I was able to get around better. I've heard about the salmon circus and have always avoided it but I'll give it a shot and see how it is.

BTW, what are some good lures for salmon? I was thinking of bringing some big spinners and getting some crazy eggs.

I have a lighter steelhead rod but I was thinking of getting something beefier for salmon especially since I can't chase. I'm looking at this TRIUMPH TRS86HF2.

Sad to say but these stories are unfortunatley true, personally me and evreyone i fish with up there have all witnessed ridiculous behavior.... I try to stay away from crowed stretches of the river and do my own thing, and for the group of guys i go with evrey year were after the steel and browns nothing like a fresh chromey thats been in the river for a day or two and these fish will take flys and live in the river all year long. But as for the meet and greet goes if youd like to learn how to fish for these fish the right way then come on up!

Also for the meet and greet big fish pool id like to mention this entry fee is gonna be. 20$ largest steelie or brown takes the pool id like to try to keep it a catch and release contest simple pic of the fish tapped out and weight on a boga or digital scale , these fish are truly trophy fish and deserve to live

It's understandable to have an unfavorable attitude to the salmon river and it's crowds and all that go with it. However, as I've said in the past, I've had great fun at our meetings. In the last year on this site I've fished with great guys that I'm in constant contact with, done some ocean fishing on members boats and fished private lakes. I've probably gained 100 years of knowledge from anglers way more experienced than myself. That's all I can say. If anyone is thinking about coming, I say join us. Keep dreams of monster salmon to realistic expectations. You may or may not catch. I can guarantee you will meet great anglers, learn a few things and have some fun if you bring the right attitude.

Here here dude! I can echo the same exact sentiments about this site. Met some quality people and they've all been extremely helpful, expanding my angling horizons well beyond what I thought was a pretty extensive knowledge base.

I'd love to get up there and take a shot at the chrome. Speaking with a few of you about it is enough to make the adrenaline pump! Uncertain if I can swing it, though.

Tryn to get that wknd off of work.
QUESTION.....
Ive been going up for years.
Yes..... im a snagger.
Tried to catch em legally and it just dont work.
Dont get me wrong ive mouth hooked em. Flossing or whatever call it, from Aggression strikes, ect. but you ALL know they dont eat.
So I know people actually do catch em and believe me I want to learn.
Will there be some type of instruction on fishing here?
Now dont everyone get there panties in a bunch cause I sangged em cause I know at one time you all have.
I just honestly want to learn.
Thx.

Really really really got the itch!!! Salmon fishing is like fishing for blues on crank! Last yr i was literally throwing blank hooks for them and hooking up! Fishing sacks is greay for salmon but it ups your odds dramatically for some steel or browns! Wise old man once said to me fish 1,2 lb test drift it through if you get a bite you know hes in there and you can work on him with your 4-8 not like you stand a chance on 2 lol

Fast Eddie,

Why would you assume I was trying to ruin your meet and greet as opposed to painting a picture of what actually takes place on the river during the Salmon Run. A few bad experiences.....I've been fishing the river for over 30 years and I can assure you I'm referring to more than a few bad experiences. I actually thought my recommendation to fish the DSR, if you can afford the fee, or the UFZ or LFZ would help everyone have a better time and enjoy the benefits of a great fishery. From posts you've made, you're obviously experienced with the river, so you know exactly what I'm talking about regarding the comments I made in my post. I was simply trying to prepare people who are willing to make a long run of what the environment is. That's called adding reality and perspective to the thread, not trying to ruin anyone's trip as you suggest. I didn't create the environment on the river and am not one of the clowns who snags every fish that swims by with a 10 foot surf rod. But as you know they're all over the river. It would be best to stay away from the Town Pool, the Ball Park, the Tressel Pool and the Sportsmans Pool and even Ellis Cove and surrounding area if you don't like crowds and don't want to witness the complete lack of sportsmanship that takes place. It could ruin your trip. Take time to fish the spots on the river where it takes a little walking to get to them if you know where they are. You'll be rewarded and I believe it will greatly improve your experience. I think the Meet and Greet is a great thing you're doing, that doesn't mean people aren't entitled to know what to expect when they get there. Would you rather it come as a complete surprise and have people pissed off or disappointed no one said anything? I for one would rather know as much as possible about the river and if there are options that would make this world class fishery a more enjoyable experience for me and my son if he were going with me I'd certainly appreciate someone pointing it out. I wish someone did that for me 35 years ago, it would have made the difference on more than a few trips. If that's not helpful let me know and I'll delete my posts. The SR is as good a fishery as you'll find in the world for Brown Trout and Steelhead, you just have to endure the clowns that make a mockery of the fishery during the Salmon Run and hope the weather turns cold sooner than later and the water flow is high to allow these trophy fish to run the gauntlet of snaggers on the river. Once Columbus Day is behind us and the weather starts to change and the leaves are off the trees, that's when the Salmon River comes alive. Steelhead and browns start pouring into the river, crowds for the most part disappear and you can have trips which you'll remember for the rest of your life. Absolutely epic at times! What I would suggest for anyone going on the meet and greet is to devote some amount of time learning the river. Ignore the full parking lots. Get a map of the river off of any of the popular web sites and drive around. Every fish has to travel the entire river to get to the hatchery or the dam and there's a lot of off the beaten path places to fish if you take time to walk a little. It's worth the effort. Check out the UFZ and the LFZ, if you have a fly rod it is without doubt the place to fish to get away from the crowds. It does get crowded at times but no where near as crowded as the lower river. I've had trip where 40 to 50 brown / steel head were caught in a day. My son has caught browns to 17 pounds and I've caught steel head over 20 pounds in the river. Average steel head is probably 5 - 8 pounds but fish over 10 are quite common. Learn the river, learn the techniques, and choose the right time of year to fish and you'll be hooked on the best fresh water fishery bar none.

My apologies if my post was considered offensive by anyone. As I said I will gladly delete them if people don't think a dose of reality about the river or suggestions which might improve your experience are beneficial. Let me know and I'd be happy to delete them. Either way I hope everyone has a great trip and learns something about the river and proper fishing techniques.

Myself dakota totally agree with ya, these things you mentioned are sadly true. last year i was fishing down low guy legally caught a nice hen chromey bout 10 lbs does a nice release makin ready the fish is ready lets her go two russian kids run down to watch, as the guy releases the fish i turn to him and told him very nice man u dont see that much. No sooner than that the russian kid rips a hook into the same fish sitting in the same spot where the gentleme. Had released it made me sick! Folks you will see outrageous and stupid things as mentioned we go where the steels at and we wilk be fishin the right way if you dont know how to ask mysef or eddie have years of experience. Doing this and will be more than happy to help. Depending waterflow is going to factor i. Where we will be fishing lfz woukd be ideal i could take the group up above the bridge and eddie coukd take the spin fishing crowd below the bridge or somthin along that. Ps ... think of the salmon as baitfish lol the real fish is the steelies and browns.

Fast Eddie,

Just sent you a pm. As I mentioned if you're up at the Salmon River November or throughout the winter, let me know and maybe we can spend some time on the river. Just a few pictures of what the Salmon River fishery is all about and the world class trout fishery it provides.

Attached picture is of glue egg clusters I started making about 10 years ago. I have yet to find anyone who sells egg clusters like these and I can safely say when steel head and browns are on eggs (steel head or brown trout eggs), these clusters fished nymph style will out produce any other presentation. I release every trout I catch, so there's no need to kill a brown or steel head for it's eggs with this fly. If anyone in the M&G wants to further understand what my post was intended to say about fishing the salmon river the right way after the circus leaves town, I'd be more than happy to meet up and offer you what I've earned over the years. As I said, it's a world class fishery and one you will enjoy if you fish it the right way and more importantly at the right time of year and in the right locations. Don't let the excitement of seeing 20 and 30 lb salmon or 15 lb trout influence your behavior. Salmon for the most part will not feed once they enter the river and are in spawning mode. Aside from an occasional aggression strike, they're in the river to perpetuate their species and that's it. There have been countless arguments about this over the years but that's my opinion. Browns and steel head are completely the opposite. Browns will spawn in the fall and have a voracious appetite. I've had instances where I've caught the same fish four times in one day, every one of them actually hit....no snagging or lining. Steel head spawn in the spring and feed all winter long in the river. Eggs and insects are their primary forage. They feed throughout and if you learn the proper techniques you will have an experience of a lifetime and catch a fish of a lifetime....guaranteed.

Good luck to everyone who makes the trip in October, I wish you all the best but as I said please learn the river and proper techniques and don't let the adrenalin rush influence bad behavior. You'll eventually be rewarded for your sportsmanship!

Got my rod and reel ready. Was gonna use my okuma avenger 40 that already is fully spooled with 10lb test (though should I put on 12 or 15?) Was wondering what people would recommend I do. Egg sacs under a float? bouncing the bottom with egg sac or something else? I've been told the sponge thing by some and then hell no by others, not sure what to do.

I'll be up there Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, though I will probably fish the most on Sunday morning. If anyone would be willing to bring me to one of their spots Sunday that would be great! PM me

See you all this weekend!!!!!!!!!!

Just checked the weather.gov report. Looks like chance of rain on Friday night into saturday. Not sure what to think as I spent 6 weeks up there this summer I saw countless storms come from nowhere and forecasted apocalyptic monsoons never show up. Bring tarps for your tents and dress appropriately. Nights are cold but we aren't talking frost on the ground kinda of conditions. If anyone has questions, send me a text of pm.

Nice fish, and good eating, congrats! Unlike most guys, I prefer the king salmon. I c&r everything all year long so it's nice to bring home some filet in the fall. Now wait for a steelhead and you'll really be hooked. The fish in that river has a tendency to ruin anglers due to its monster size trout.

Mikey T,

Still sounds like you guys had a great trip. Good to see some fish come in Saturday night. Will be interesting if there are continued bodies of fish to come or if the salmon run for some reason never materialized this year. So many factors involved. Hopefully regardless of the salmon run, the steel head and brown runs are at or above par. Nice steel head in the picture. Is that the Sycamore hole with the Wall hole in the back ground. Nice seam and holding area for fish running the rapids below....great spot at the DSR, one of many!

I only got to fish for a few hours Sunday morning and I didn't get anything. River was super crowded. Saw plenty of others catching but with how many folks were out there it was more like 1 person catching per 20 anglers at any given time. So I guess technically it was slow.

Also had a hole in my waders, entire right leg filled up and destroyed my phone in my pocket. Oyyy

Alright boyz alright!!! Staying the extra day yesterday and getting home just now payed off. Mikey's report is on point without a doubt. Alex got his first Steelie and a big gun around 12-14 lbs or so. Fishing was the slowest I've seen it in 18 years. No big pushes of fish and lots of angry anglers. It really didn't matter, we had so much fun at Seth's camp it was ridiculous. Great food, lots of drinks and a ton of laughs. I'd go just about anywhere with this crew, anytime. Seth is a great host as always. Thanx for everything buddy! You are the man.
Day 1, slowwwwwwww fishing. I hooked 2 fish up high that I couldn't get in. Ahhhhhh, not much going on but we still gave it HELL!
Day 2, slowwwwwwww again with not much going on besides Alex hooking a BEAST STEELIE. Had nothing put a bend in my rod until we ran upstream again. Another fish hooked and lost. And so the trip goes on.
Day 3, we start up high and get some inside info that there was a major run late in the afternoon on day 2. So back down low we go! What a circus! I love every minute of it. Walk down to the spot and see Salmon and Coho's doing backflips everywhere. I find my lucky rock, surprisingly nobody's on it, 2nd cast, GAME ON!!! Feisty Kings ruled the river on Sunday with a few nice Ho's in the mix. I did not land any Ho's but hooked one around 10 lbs that jumped out of the water 22 times in 10 seconds. YEA BUDDY!!! Everyone in our crew had left and it's just myself and Bob grinding it out trying to get our fix. I'm starting to hook Kings on every other cast and see my good friend Bob getting frustrated. So what do I do when I see a friend in need, I hook a King on my rod and hand it off, YUP! Bob's shaking like a leaf chasing this 15 lb King downstream and finally another angler nets the fish or him. I go down give my buddy a big congrats and take a quick pic of my smiling friend! Another satisfied angler. I couldn't be more thrilled watching my homie land his first river Salmon. The day goes on and the final tally for the day is somewhere around 30 Kings hooked with a Coho in the mix, landed 6 of those Kings and every battle was insane. Fresh fish in the river and they are full of piss and vinegar. Go get em boyz and girlz!!!
Overall the fishing was subpar for this time of year but what really matters to me is the great times I had with some great friends. Thanx to all that made it up. Your all one of a kind!!! Let's keep this going! I'll be headed up again at the end of the month when more Chrome is in the river. TIGHT LINEZ TO ALL!!!! FASTEDDIE OUT!!!!!
Pictured is Bob's first King at 15 lbs or so. And of course there's a pic of myself with a 25lb class pissed off female. YEA BUDDY!!!!!:D
