Talk about not going down without a fight :p My buddy found a dead smallie along the Passaic last year with a sunfish have its size stuck in its throat.

.
Damn...it happens.
Sunfish have evolved into a shape that makes swallowing them difficult. They have a high, laterally-compressed shape and painfully sharp fin rays.
A sunny has to be really small to get swallowed. That's one of the reasons soft-rayed fishes like shiners and chub make better forage fish than sunfish or perch.

good job, glad to see u finally got sum solid eyes up there! the bigger one is a rly quality fish, looks great!
Sunfish are the death of many gamefish, Ive seen a few dead floaters with sunnys lodged in the gullet, those damn spikes are like barbs. The worst one is a 9-10lb walleye on LH, was a monster, he too choked on a 10" sunny lodged in his mouth. I know alot of bodies of water have a huge population of herring/baitfish, but when u get big u gotta eat big, it would take a dozen herring to equal the meal of a big sunny, they dont wanna bother with the chase of small stuff over and over when they can inhale a single meal.

I thought pines had tons of herring in it? usually u see the wipers roaming open water chasing schools, rare to see them shallow this time of year, the spring is when they will chomp anything on the small side, altho they do love sunnys especially in waters where there arent much baitfish. The wiper was actually developed to help grow larger fish by eating smaller sunnys and gamefish.

Not too many herring left in PL. the lake has huge schools of sunnies, like thousands in a school its crazy. they get smashed by everything. i wish it had more herring in the lake.
when we fish herring there we actually dont do too well. do better on Livetarget brand sunny crankbaits mid diver.
