Did a nice little float trip from the kayaks saturday morning/afternoon. I figure we did about 5 miles, give or take. This is a stretch of river I have no experience in, so we winged it and hoped for the best. Launched at 7am and finished up around noon. Very peaceful stretch of river with no homes or development. TONS of laydowns and even one spot where three trees were completely blocking the river. Steep muddy banks prevented us from portaging around them, so we portaged OVER them! Kayaks rule :p. Saw a decent amount of natives hanging around, including a fox, deer, musk rats, numerous birds, and even a 3ft snake feasting on a still-moving fish on the bank. Fishing was good, with a total of 7 Pike landed and 1 Largemouth. Highlights were my buddy/NJF member Bling306's 31" Pike and a plus sized Pike for me that fell out of my hands before a pic/measurement, guesstimated around 32"-33". No beasts, but fun day on the river with my buddies. Can't wait to do it again.

Great pics.

Anyone who paddles the Passaic becomes adept at schlepping their kayak over trees that have fallen across the river.

Sunday I was paddling the Passaic all the way up in the Great Swamp National Wildlife Reserve. Climbing out of your kayak onto a fallen tree, dragging your kayak up and over the trunk until you reach the balance point where the kayak slides the rest of the way down on its own, and then climbing back into your kayak is a task that seems daunting at first, but gets easier with practice.

Its good that the river is 80 miles long. I spent 11 hrs along it thu-fri-sat and saw one fisherman despite great flows and nice weather. If u stay away from the bridge spots, its all yours.

We didnt see a single fisherman. I've been making an effort to hit new areas away from the usual spots that get hammered on a consistent basis. Get out of your comfort zones people, these Pike are everywhere.

Sounds and looks like a great trip Skunk !! My winter time paddle trips start at Pia Costa in Fairfield and I finish up at Twin Bridges. Usually Jan. Feb. and March. It's about a 12 mile trip by water and about 5 miles by car. Plenty of turns in the river in the GP section. There was that one year that I made it about 8 miles only to see the river was frozen for the last 4 miles. WOW, was that a long drag through the woods !!!! LOL

Maybe we will get together and make that trip this winter.
