…………………….@ a rock pile 4 miles off of Belmar.

A NOAA biologist ID’ed it: an aquaculture (emaciated & deformed dorsal fin) Atlantic Salmon escapee.

Thanx for posting that info. A shame the fish is so skinny.

Not gonna ID the boat.

I guess its skinny 'cause it couldn't find any feed pellets on the trip from Maine.

Fish was caught on a party boat out of Belmar. That Atlantic needs some pellets badly. It's a long way from home!

I wonder is this is the first time a Atlantic Salmon has been caught off of NJ? I am sure it doesn't happen too often!

Boomer,

Not sure why the secrecy regarding which boat caught it since from what I understand it is a site sponsor. I heard it was the Big Mohawk and fish was caught I believe Wednesday or Thursday last week.

No, it was not that boat. Secrecy: the captain was very wary, as it is illegal for anglers to catch & possess Atlantic salmon (farm raised or wild). It was released prior to docking.

In the early 1980’s NJF&W ID’ed an Atlantic salmon caught by a party boat. Smaller & wild,……….I don‘t think there were any farm raised salmon back then.

Out of curiosity, why is it illegal if it's Atlantic salmon caught in the Atlantic Ocean?

Because there are so few of them. They are an "Endangered Species".

Wasn't aware that was why the name was being withheld. When I first saw the picture I thought it was a sea run brown but guess not. Either way, very unusual catch!
