Nice mix of panfish and gamefish. Fished several little hike-in only ponds. Found one interesting pond that had only sunfish, golden shiners and perch - no bass or pickerel. The perch are top predator and some were quite big. Caught like 50 of them in about 90 minutes with some approaching 13". Saw an eagle when I first popped out of the woods. Must be his favorite spot for dinner. Another pond I missed a dandy pickerel that slammed my buzzbait. I had a 6" steel leader and it STILL cut the line. Thats sharp teeth!(or big mouth).

Funny story of the day. This one pond is quite narrow & small(about 2 acres) and lined with trees/bushes making it difficult to see anything beyond a few feet left or right. Anyhow turns out two other guys were fishing at the far end of the pond. They didn't know I was there and when I casted my buzzbait , it was so quiet I could here the one guy say "look a snake crossing the water". I kind of chuckled, cast again and he says "There's another one". I was really laughing now. I figure they must know its a lure right? Third cast. He says "THERE IT IS AGAIN!. I covered my mouth and laughed my ass off as I quitely walked off back to my car. They'll never know what they really saw.

That's great. I love hike-in only ponds.

I have a theory why that one pond had no bass. It may have been fished out, or more likely it's a pH issue.

I have fished a few some hike-in ponds in Sussex County. My theory was if I could hike further than a bucket-sitter would be willing to carry his bucket, the biggest bass in the world would live there. After hiking miles-and-miles through the woods, I was disappointed to find the ponds only held stunted sunfish, small perch, and maybe some small pickerel. (Not to mention a ton of Water Snakes)

I was completely baffled by this lack of bass until I hiked out to Sunfish Pond in the Worthington State Forest. As soon as you arrive at the pond, there is a sign telling you that due to the natural acidity of the lake and acid rain, the lake is just too acidic for anything but sunfish. A nice way of saying, "Don't Bother".
