Headed back up to MCR w/ Dale on 5/25/14. We left a bit earlier than the last few weeks to avoid holiday wknd congestion at the ramp. Plan worked out well. Scooped 5 dz herring and launched quickly. Off we went. Hit the same area we've fished the last few wknds and results were slower. Until Dale bagged a beaut. 21.5" smallie... I think it was his pb. She's def getting entered in the SMB contest. And she owes him a new digital scale! Lol...I caught a few small SMBs in there area and we decided to shove off.
Next spot we had a mixed bag of LMBs, SMBs, and a slimer. I'm 3 for 3 on slimers there after never catching one there before. All nice healthy fish, too.
Hit a section we havent fished and we had a steady pick through out the day fishing livies on drop offs and around weed beds and timber. We hit one spot where the drop off was drastic. Prob 20 ft from the shoreline, we could see rocky out-crops but we were anchored in 30+ ft of water. That place is nuts.
My first cast in that spot I had a submarine LMB follow my herring to the boat. Pitched it back out and BAM! She slammed it. After a pretty long fight Dale netted the slob for me. She was 21" and change and faaaaaaaaatttt!! Easily over 5 lbs. Snapped some shots and off she went. Forgot to mention--while I was fighting the fish, Dale had a fish on too. Nice 16-17 inch SMB that he set the hook on and let linger while I battled my fish. Bigger fish take precedence on the GetANet!! That's for sure! After we got his to the boat, he actually managed another smaller fish in short order. Then it slowed. Just as we're getting ready to relocate, Dale starts reeling up some slack line. Then his rod doubles over. I ask, "are you snagged?" he responds eloquently with "why the f*ck do you have to say that?!?" LOL... Short answer was no... He reels up and twirling new specimen comes up from the depths. It got a look at the boat, shit itself and went ape shit down and out into deeper water. As it's ripping drag, I'm pulling the anchor and Dale is handling the motor to get away from the shoreline. After a pretty decent fight I netted his fish--a beautiful 22-24" laker! Odd that the fish hit in less than 30' of water.
After that we had a few more SMBs and LMBs, and a yellow perch. I messed around with rock bass on small jigs at the launch while Dale was getting the trailer. Good day for sure... We had 15 or 16 fish. A mixed bag and some heft to go along with it. Good stuff Dale... That's 3 trips in a row! Let's keep the mojo flowing!
Here's the fish porn... catch em' up!
