Me and Bubba hit a local spot in Union county, got a little bit of everything, all on worms....wasn't sure what the big guy was, saw it struggling to get over some rapids, it looks like a big gizzard shad to me from an online search? Also saw some small shad in the rapids, too...

You are correct, that is a gizzard shad. Excellent catfish bait

Will get even bigger also but yeah that is a pretty good size one. We see them quit a bit while bowfishing

Your fishing my old stomping grounds! When I first moved to nj my brother and I hooked those gizzards and had no idea what the hell they were. They pull like mad. Glad to see they're back in there. Pretty much the end of the road for them at those falls. They dumped a decent amount of trout in the lake above those falls. Browns and that small batch of brookies towards the end of the stocking season. Stripers make it up to those falls too! PM me... Got some things you can look into over there with your son.

Any tricks to catching the gizzards? There were a bunch around the area and I was dying to get one, but couldn't hook up...threw a couple spinners but no luck, also tried the only thing close to a dart I had, a trout magnet head, but no luck with it naked or tipped with a worm...back at it in the am...

Very nice mixed bag out of my home waters. Lots of fish in there. Channel cats usually run upstream after a good rain as well as those white perch and gizzard Shad. 25 years ago we used to get nice Smallies and yellow perch out of there. Nice catch!!!:D
