After working about 20 hours this weekend I decided to take a mental health monday. Headed down to the BIG DIZZLE to see if I could get into some Philly Tarpon, Silver bullets, drag ripping beasts. Pulled up to the spot around 11 and the guys were there but it was slow. HMMMMMMMMMMMM, gave it a go anyway and around noon, more hook ups started happening. Wasn't long before I had my first Shad of the season. Tons of fun boys, tons of fun!!! Everyone on the river hooked up at least a couple times and felt the power of these SILVERY CREATURES. I myself wound up going 5 for 12 off the beach. Not bad for the first trip out since last year. Got my fix, caught up with some familiar faces and got to relax after a long weekend of work. YEA BUDDY!!!! The best bite in this area happened between 12-3 and man was it windy. I almost got hit in the head with a tree limb, SHEEEEEEEEEEEEESH!!!! What a day despite the white caps and gale force winds.
Are the Shad in? UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, the answer is YES!!!!
TIGHT LINEZ!!!!!

With all the metal health days you take you gotta be the sanest guy around. (not sure sanest is a word) Glad to see you hooked up Eddie, I'm still looking for my first this year. Sure are fun fish and the guys are mostly a friendly bunch.

NJF's most well rounded freshwater fisherman at work. Nice Shad pal. "Catch a Shad from the Delaware" is on my to-do list!

I caught a small one in the D&R Canal yesterday on a garden worm while trout fishing. I guess he was lost.

Great job Eddie on your shad and nice pic. I haven't missed a shad run in 25 years . It's nice to see some shad posts here on the site. I'll be hitting up the Delaware this Fri/ Sat and Sunday. I hope this rain and cold spell don't kill the bite for now.

.
I have a dumb question. Sometimes in the summer I'll see a big shad whirling or gasping at the surface. I assume it's going to die soon.
Are these shad okay to eat or once the dying process begins the meat has already gone bad?

The shad are a few miles above the Gap, in numbers, I know that. The week's weather is gonna kill the bite tho, but it will rebound.
You don't want to eat a dying fish you find floating around. While eating it won't likely harm you; while dying, most animals and fish release adrenaline and other chemicals into their bloodstream, which spoils the taste of the meat. The quicker an animal is killed the better it will taste. If it's dying already when you come upon it, it's not gonna taste good. Besides all that, you don't know the fish to be healthy and free of disease. Floating around in the river isn't a good sign. The only fish you properly should eat would be a vibrant healthy fish that doesn't show any signs of disease. I hope this helps.
