EDIT: Oops. I meant 4/5/14... Not 4/3... My bad.

Took my 5 yr old step son out to a pond down my way that was pretty well stocked for the opener. Got there at 730 AM to a small crowd. Started fishing at the 8 AM whistle and had some strikes right away. I was tossing spinners and CD3s. Had him set up with the ol' worm n bobber. We had some success throughout the day hooking and landing 6 or 7 stocker browns. Finally got him his first trout! Awesome watching the little noodle rod I bought him bend in half with a thrashing trout on the hook!

We did better than most--didnt look like there was ever really a crazy bite. And once the sun was high, the bites were very few and far between. Missed a lot on the hook and bobber. He's still learning how to cross the fish's eyes but we'll get there soon enough.

Here's a shot I snapped with my GoPro. Catch em' up!

Thanks guys. He loves it. It's the same way I started with my family when I was a squirt. Hopefully I can turn him into a future fishing junky like the rest of us! It's tough keeping him interested during lulls in the action but he'll get better over time--I mean, he is only 5 lol.

In between hook ups he was running around like a maniac fighting imaginary aliens and monsters, climbing trees, and poking people's stringers with a stick--I wish I had a 1/4 of his energy haha... Next time I wanna get video b/c his mannerisms when fighting a fish are hilarious! Just tough coordinating everything...

We do need to keep the youth involved. Kids get overly consumed with digital mediums and video games. That being said, there are no video game consoles under my roof. I refuse it. As he gets older, I'll teach him how to tie knots, bait a hook, cast a lure accurately, etc. He already willingly handles bait and has no fear of handling fish. Most importantly...all he knows is "catch, picture, release"! Soon enough, I'll have him fighting tuna, chopping chunks, and telling fish stories, all while becoming a better fisherman than me. At least I hope so anyway... Having his attention and interest now will hopefully yield ideal results years from now.
