Yesterday evening I caught, then released a 23" 4.5 lb female bowfin with a 1/32 oz jig on 2 lb test in a small beaver pond in Central NJ.

Well, now we have the bowfins big brother, snakeheads. I saw a decent sized one yesterday farther north than I thought they had already spread. It was a lake fed by the river near bordentown. Guess they're spreading fast. This one had to be 5#+.

Very cool! I always forget we have a population of bowfins swimming in some Jersey waters.

Yes indeed! Buddy of mine got a Snakehead north of Rt 80 last year! They are in, but not in huge numbers in the northern area!

People kill bowfin thinking they are snakeheads.....uggggh
Snakehead sightings should be reported to F&G.
Nice fish, glad you got 'em, I've never even seen one.

I had planned to report it, but on my walk out I saw signs saying snakeheads had been reported there. I'll head back tomorrow to see if I can get one to bite.

Unbelievable battle with ultralight tackle on a short line. I thought that it would break my line or bite off my lure. They have incredible endurance. The fish made many long runs and actually jumped a few times. It also dove into the muddy bottom. I was very fortunate to land it.
