So I'm looking to try a few new places this year. Has anyone fished Canister before? I know you need to get a permit because it's part of the Pequannock Watershed. How much is the fee and where is the boat ramp? Don't see a ramp on Google maps.

Thanks in advance

Buy permit, $30 family fishing, $30 boat permit, get map, find boat launch. It's on Canistear rd. near the cemetery. Good lake for Bass and Walleye.

Cannistear is ok. Had some decent days. I'd choose a few of the other sheds before there.

Cannistear is OK but I prefer Echo Lake or Clinton . Some nice smallies in Clinton. The great thing is that the permit is good for all of them.

I was looking for new permit info since the NWCDC was dissolved last year but all I could find so far is some old permit info.

When fishing the reservoirs we just refer to them as a whole group and say "Shed" so that one reservoir doesn't get crazy packed because someone posted a report from a specific one. Lurkers man  Kills me to see specific reservoir names in shed reports! not many parking spaces up there. this is a good topic tho. I can PM you with more info.

If you do go up to Canistear and launch a boat, watch out for two big rocks about 10ft off the ramp to the left. When launching go straight out right, then go wherever.

In my experience Canistear has a good amount of smallies, but they are usually smaller bass. not to say that hogs dont exist.
Walleye are tough because they dont allow night fishing, and it closes in october, and to catch em during warmer months you really gotta go early in the AM or just before dark or cloudy days.
Also that lake gets VERY windy. on days that say stockholm 10mph from the north, you can add about 5-8mph onto that when on the water.

Hope this helps,

-John

I dunno about this lurker thing with the Newark reservoirs. I'm sure there are lurkers here who can temporarily burn out certain locations, but I'm willing to bet that 96.57 percent of the people who buy EWR watershed fishing permits are serious fishermen who all aren't going to pile into one reservoir just because someone had a good day at one of them. If a handful of the bucket brigaders are willing to shell out the money for a permit, more power to them, but I doubt most will. Most are looking for a cheap bucket of fish and won't spend the time, money and effort to buy a permit, and its not like the watershed is big a secret anyway.

Especially since you have to show them your valid NJ fishing license to buy a permit.

Details haven't changed except the Sheds are now open later until November 2nd with the exception of Echo which is Nov 30th - easiest way is to just go up to the Echo Lake office and buy a permit. Ritchie is there Mon thru Sat and will take care of you.

Thanks guys for the information. Birdman thanks for the warning about the rocks at the boat launch. I guess I have a few weeks before I can even check it out after seeing that pick from Sunday.
