I volunteered to work at the education pond. I'm not looking forward to the typhoon we're going to get.

Went up there this morning with my son, had a blast even with the rain! Was a great experience, he got to fish the pond 2x, catching a rainbow he probably never beat in the wild- 20 inches, probably 4-4 1/2 lbs....we got a little wet, but the rain did keep the crowds away, i guess...may head up again in the AM...pics to follow...
got up there around 11:15, first thing Bubba sees is the "Hawg trough", he's seen it before, but only with bass in it...I never saw it with such a variety of fish
, we spent a bit there trying to name all the species, he really got a kick out of that

I THINK they even had one of the Landlocked salmon they are stocking in there, too? or just a brownie that lost his color?

We were off to the pond after a quick look at the actually hatchery races, loaded with 'bows it looked like..couldnt really get a pick of that, though...
the pond was set up nicley, you could tell they were ready for a crowd; kids 8-16 were allowed to 'register' for a half hour fishing slot, we lucked out and got right in, didn't seem to be many waiting around...was a nice set up with 5 'spots' on each side of the lake, 3 fisherpeople at each spot with a voulnteer at each one giving you bait (night crawlers) and casting for you if need be...lots of good tips at our first spot from volunteer Rick...

Then we were off to the kiddie pond, nice set up with a ton of hungry trout for the little kids....I have never seen so many trout caught at an event, my kid was ecstatic...used all meal worms here....

All in all a fun time, even if we got a little wet and were late for his hockey game this afternoon, lol

Big thanks to all the Fish and Game folks who made this possible, especially the volunteers who suffered through some pretty cruddy conditions to make the day a success for lots of kids, including mine! Also a big shot out to Wilson who let me and Bubba know we should hit the open house when we met him at the hackettstown meeting in the fall....may head back up tomorrow if the rain ever stops...

The kids that braved the rain on Sunday did great in the pond. I had one little girl catch 8 rainbows, the smallest being 15".
