if that's the central jersey bridge i'm thinking of, at dusk, usually the herring start showing up, and the larger crappie, perch, pickerel, and bass aren't far behind them! last year, i was using shiners, and was picking up the larger crappie, away from the bridge, under a bobber. a trout magnet works well too, just watch, as there's a brush pile on the parking lot side of the bridge that will hang you up!
this is, of course, you can get past the bucket brigade and their 20 poles lined up along the bridge as they fish for golden shiners, and anything else that swims, for dinner or bait!

im new to freshwater and i've seen this on numerous posts. what does a bobber rig look like? and a shiner or trout magnet underneath? do you just let it drift or retrieve it?

A simple float above a jig and plastic or bait is fine. Your everyday bober with your favourite panfish jig set the distance between the jih and bober keep changing the depth until you find em. Small slow twitches works or just float it snd sometimes slow retrieve . Works best they could be at 1ft might be at ten all depends

Interesting. Very excited to learn the sweet water this year and continue to learn more about the salt as well. Now, if the spring could just finally show itself
