Called Ms. Kelly at Union Cty Parks and left a message to see if they were going to remove the fencing around the lake. Told her the state intends to stock it with 800 trout. And it should be removed so the kids can gain access to the lake to fish.
Still awaiting a reply.

We also talked about this in our RRTU meeting last night. The gentleman who puts the stocking signs up didn't do it yet because of the fence. We have someone is meeting with the county parks people today to get it fixed. Don't be afraid to call Union County Parks to get the fence taken down.

The purpose of the fence is give the plants a chance to grow along the shore, right? Wonder why they fenced in the fishing spots (the stone areas)? Were they being over-protective of the plantings? My daughter and nephews love to there. Also. I'm sure carp will find their way back!

The plastic fencing was put in to stop the geese going up on the residents lawns. Thats why it goes completely around the lake including where the rip rap is.
Call the county to have it removed! Great place for the kids to fish.

I've hear the carp have already found there way back. I don't know if they drained the whole area in the woods, but there isn't much separating the Rahway from Nomahegan. The carp will be back.

The fence is there to keep the geese in the water and help the riprian buffer planting. They never drained the back of the lake, so carp and turtles will still be around. Even if they drained it completely, carp would find their way in from the pond at the college.
The carp and turtles and sunfish were still in there last spring/summer. My son was feeding them cheerios off the bridge a few times. I thought for sure the nets would be down this spring, how long does it take for the WEEDS to grow and take root geez.

Can't the geese just fly onto their lawns?

They can't fly when they are molting. And, when they can fly, it's more work than they typically like to do.
The fences work. IMHO, a shotgun would work better.

Any further details on the fence removal??I think the intension was to copy the planting work done on upper echo lake....In that case the shoreline will become almost inaccessible....If the fencing and plantings are to keep the geese from walking out of the water and onto ppls lawns, than why put the fencing on the ENTIRE perimeter?? maybe they will take it down on the opposite side, adjacent to the woods and ball fields....
taught myself to bass fish at that place in the late eighties and early nineties..
My folks still live in unioin county, moved out almost 20 yrs ago so the fishing I do there is limited to when I visit them....hope it all gets straightened out fer the kids fishin derby

Eddie said it best when he told me when I moved here that there are some very interesting things about Union County fishing. I caught my biggest Union County bass in the absolute last place you would ever expect there to even be a bass. I've caught my 10 biggest carp in Union County, all within 10 minutes of my house. I take hikes with my wife and find fishing holes I didn't even know were there. It's definitely good to have all these parks around when you don't have time to make a day out of it.
Glad to hear the fences are down and that there are still some golden boys left in there. I love that place in the summer.

The park is looking better than ever, water looks great. Couple floods, hopefully not causing damage, and the pond will be back to normal. Any idea if the state put anything back in after it was refilled. Can't remember if this conversation already took place. Lots and lots of fish in UC indeed. People of Cranford and UC do a great job of keeping that park clean. Keep up the good work. Mark, the bigguns will be in there again very, very soon. Carp=NJ STEELHEAD!!!

As far as I know, the only stocking that is gonna happen there is, this yrs trout stocking and whatever RRTU puts in for the kids fishing derbies....Similar to how shallcross was stocked over the yrs....
Others in the know would prob have better info than me...I am not in the know:(
Does anybody have any reliable info as to how much or how deep they dredged it??
Might just have to fish it wit ma jigs to determine that....Just figured that some yocals may know first hand from talking to the workers last yr while the dredging was goin on??/?

My guess is that the lake is 4'-5' everywhere they worked on it. No holes or structure or contours.
There are good numbers of fish in there, but the bass fisherman are going to need to wait to get a respectable fish. The bass they stocked were not big.
RRTU isn't going to put trout anywhere where they're going to go belly-up in June. If the lake doesn't fish well, maybe we can talk to the state about stocking channel catfish or something.

Nothing better than catching a few bass in between classes there. Hopefully some fish hunkered down in the backwaters towards the Rahway and find there way back.

All the barriers are gone and shore access is amazing. The banks are sloped nicely with some areas having a cloth type platform to stand on. There are also some rocky points that aren't as stable as they look:eek: almost went for a swim.

The cloth was put down to promote the vegetation they planted you shouldn't be standing on it. Stand behind it. And why fish off the rip rap it doesn't go out into the pond. It's just on the shoreline.

Nomahegan Park is fishing well. RRTU was set up on Saturday at the end of the lake with the parking lot. Didn't see many trout caught at that end of the lake, my daughters did catch a 13" LMB and a 12" bullhead.
The other side of the bridge along Park Ave was fishing well for brown trout. I saw two breeders around 22" go home.

Passed by it this a.m. and it looks like they are installing some sort of walking dock , parralell to the shore....Maybe handicapped access, not really sure as its not that close to the parking lot....Its about 100 yards from the main lot on the ball field side of the lake.....Any additional info would be gr8:)

Two fishing platforms are being installed. They're not specifically for the handicapped, but it would be good for them.
