Such BS. It's a world record and fish of a lifetime. Don't ya think an exception would be okay? I would have killed that fish put it on my wall and paid the ticket 100 times over. Don't get me wrong, I've never killed a freshwater fish in my life other than some trout. I'm as strong of a supporter of freshwater conservation as you'll find but man get off the guys back (fish and game not you guys). It seems like no amazing catch comes without some kind of controversy these days. Look at John Petruescu's world record yellowfin that "didn't count" because he had to pass the rod under the anchor line on the bow of a long range boat. The people that hold these rules firmly in place like that just don't get it if you ask me. Poor guy, I feel bad for him.

Absolutely NOT! Rules are rules, and if you don't follow them it's just not fair to the rest of the record holders who did. I am sure the guy who caught the fish will be proud of being the #1 lake trout poacher

If the rules didn't matter, I'd just head on down to RVR and do a purse seine until I nabbed the state record breaking laker (http://www.nj.com/sports/njsports/index.ssf/2009/11/gillnetting_survey_at_round_va.html) they found in there during the fish surveys. I mean... it's a fish of a lifetime, so an exception would be ok, right?!? just this once?!?

My take on the "bag limit" regulation was always a "possession" issue, and not one of how many fish were caught. Trout fishing Jersey waters (6 during stocking, 4 thereafter), striper and hybrid (2 fish), salmon fishing NY, etc.

Fishing after reaching the bag limit is an activity that every fisherman I know is guilty of. Culling of excess fish is normal, to most, in order to stay within the limit.

This fisherman supposedly shared his first fish with a friend and kept the larger fish in his "possession".
This, to me, sounds ethical and legal.

If the rules for Jersey are the same as what's being enforced in this case, I think many of us here would be considered criminals and poachers.

Sucks that he wont get the record, but he will know he IS the record holder!! Just for fun, I'd rent a billboard and have the picture posted up for a while, lol.....:D

correct. the law works the same here in NJ. if a DFW CO sees you with a full limit and you hand an extra trout to your buddy, you are both getting tickets.

Valid point. Purse seining at round valley and catching a world record through ice have a lot in common.

Right or wrong I would have done the same thing in his situation! Seems reasonable to me as long as we were both with in our legal limit of one per person. I am not normally a law breaker but some things are just so FXXXing Ridiculous! We as a WHOLE need to use common sense a bit more!!!!
