Depending on who you talk to you either love it (mostly the locals who have the knowledge) or you hate it(guys like me who get lured in by the trophies and don't know the place well enough to be effective).

This winter I've made the rounds to a LOT of diff lakes with not much to show. Decided to take another crack at Monksville after reading some IS reports. Set up in 35 fow in the south basin right by the launch.

Knowing the place is loaded with trout most notable for me my brothers 8lb brown caught through the ice I walked out to the middle by the dam in 80fow put a trap 5ft below the ice with 4lb Floro hoping for a cruiser. Wind was whipping so me and pga pro fish were hunkered in the shelter jigging without any luck. Little after 5:00 grabbed the binoculars and noticed we had a flag up.

25 min later landed a PB 34" 12lb muskie.

Gotta thank some of the guys on IS and here on njfishing who shared valuable info and expertise. Also Keith for calming me down and sharing the experience. Was a Lotta fun.

What a great Time! That wind was a blowin today my friends, it was chilly, but good things come to those who wait...

Largest Highlight of the day...I say largest because, trust me my friends there were many..., was when NJBassman nimbly applied a cat-burglar like prowess to the line, thus coercing the muskie to the base of the hole. Finally, He thrust his bare hand into the water and gilled the beast, no gaff was needed...

Later, Victory was shared by all, and a feast was had. There were matrons a plenty, and fountains of mead for everyone in the land...

Ok, so the (Nordic) feast story isn't exactly true, but he did throw his arm into the hole..:)

he's probably talking just a lip gaff to lift them out of the hole... no permanent damage to the fish, just like a big fish hook

Great catch/fish. As hard as that place can be to fish in the spring and fall, I cannot imagine trying there in the winter.
