After 3 days of getting skunked the pike finally decided to eat in the rain this morning. I had gone 3 days without a flag and got my first at 7:45 this morning. The fish took a herring in 3' of water and was a decent fish at 37" 14lbs. At 11:45 I got my 2nd flag of the day and I knew it was a giant as soon as I saw it. After a few runs and some violent head shakes I landed her, my new PB pike at 44" 23lbs. She took a 10" dead fallfish right off the bottom of 7' of water. What a start to the season!

Fish of a lifetime congrats! I'm just curious do you ever fish that area during months of open water? Looks like it would be a blast

I've actually never fished it open water. I'll have to give it a try this spring.

Beast Alert! Amazing fish man. Would you say these big Pike prefer a big dead bait in the winter over something still swimming?

This is a great lesson as to why some guys have a knack of catching big fish.

He's doing what few of us ever do... He seems to be targeting BIG fish.. a 10 inch fallfish is a huge bait, not too many fish will go near it. Most guys want action, and would fish shiners under the ice... He fished a few days without a flag, but was patient, and was rewarded by some really spectacular fish.. I really wish I had that mindset, but alas, I would have perch/ pickerel size bait on the hooks, and thats what I would catch.. congrats on those spectacular pike.... bob

10" really isn't a big bait for pike, they have huge mouths and can eat a fish almost half as big as they are. You'd be surprised at the number of pike and size of pike you'll get on bait that size. I've caught tons of 18-24" pike and pickerel on 10-12" dead baits and most of the time they out produce live bait. Guys were fishing live shiners next to me all 3 days and didn't get 1 pike.
