Subject line says it all. I am an absolute hack when it comes to fly fishing, so I thought to myself, "Hey! Why not buy a fly kit?" So I did. Tonight was my first attempt at tying a fly. Went with a simple scud after the recent report (thank you!) and here it is:

It and I definitely need some work. More dubbing on the bottom, different top, the gold wire wrap is a bit messy, needs some legs, but I am happy it's staying together and that I was able to figure out a whip finish. Now... You think it will catch anything?! :D

That's pretty good compared to my first fly. I went with a wooly Worm. What most new fly tiers tend to do is use too much material. Less is better you can always add on. Before you know it you'll be tying epoxy flies and have feathers and fur everywhere.

Not to shabby for first time, and if you already figured out how to use a whipfinisher already sounds like ur ahead of the game already!!! What size hook u tying on? And it will def work dnt doubt urself spring stockies would gobble that up!! Heres a link from shannons fly shop some really good videos to learn if ur just starting out http://vimeo.com/m/user3412872

Use a needle to pick the dubbing on the bottom. It will make it look like it's got legs.

Looks like there are a lot of videos out there that can help also. I got as far as tying streamers and a few dries in my youth. Tie all winter and load up, looks good to me,
