View Full Version : Calling in sick with WALLEYE FEVER!

My buddy and ace Delaware River guide Mike invited me to fish for walleye with him this week. With an eye on the weather, we agreed that today was the day, so I took a much needed mental health day and met Mike at Pond Eddy at 11:00. Action was not fast, but it was steady. We managed about a dozen walleye between us, plus two smallmouths and a bunch of slammer fallfish in the 12-15 inch range (including an improbable stretch of four in a row from the exact same spot). Nothing really big, but Mike did send me home with two walleye for the table. I caught all my fish on a black and white bucktail jig tipped with a Gulp minnow. Mike did all his damage with jigs tipped with live bait, including shiners, lampreys, and some beefy creek chubs. It started POURING rain around 3:00, but we stuck it out until 5:00 when it got too dark.
It's not over yet. If you can stand the cold, get out there!

That sounds like a great day. Always good to push through the weather because you never know that next cast could be a beast but those two look beautiful. I might have to meet up with you one day to catch my first one lol.

If you want, I can get you in touch with Mike, and he can put you on the fish.

Was it a drift boat trip? Nice fish, I thought the delaware was closed to fishing that far north?

.
Great report.
I've never targeted walleye on the Delaware, but I've caught them inadvertantly when bass fishing there.
I've found they're more active during the day when the water is high and turbid.

Glad you got out. I tried to seal the deal over my vacation but the weather window closed rather fast. Book your spring trip now :)

Nice catch buddy! They sure do look tasty!!! What kind of water were they holding in up north? Great catch!!!Most of the walleye were caught in 10-15 feet of water in areas of swirling current. Low and slow with the presentation was the ticket.
Was it a drift boat trip? Nice fish, I thought the delaware was closed to fishing that far north? We fished from a drift boat; Pond Eddy is far too deep to wade. Only the East and West branches are closed this time of year; the main stem is open for business 24/7/365!

I thought the walleye put a nice bend in the rod.
