Hit RV from shore at 6 am. Had a couple dink bass swallowing shiners under my slip bobbers but no trout hitting them. So crazy since last year that method produced endless trout in October. It's so true that not every year is the same. Oh well, eventually did get 1 trout on powerbait, 16" bow. Made me happy. I just love being on that shoreline in the fall, nothing beats it. Around 9 I switched over to the swimming side and hooked into my first pickerel ever. Was refreshing to catch something different, and he was a big one too. That swimming area is loaded with pickerel right now, and they're hungry.
Then went over to the south branch and hooked into 2 more nice trout, a brook and bow, both about 15". Both on black and gold PM. Great morning for me, haven't had a good day like that in a while.

Nice catch Chris! Dinner is served. Are the Trout cruising the shorelines? I used to go this time of year and do very well. We usually started at 4 am and left by 8.

Nice fish you got there. I agree with you, there is something magical about fishing there this time of year. I went last sun (10/20) from 7-9 am. I got 8 browns on shiners in the first hour, all 12-15". I missed a few more. I was getting hit EVERY cast. I've been fishing there since I was in 2nd grade (1992) every fall and this is by far the most action ive ever had. Around 8 it turned off, fish were still jumping but not eating. I had powerbait out the whole time and never got a hit on it. A few other guys around me were catching on powerbait-rainbows, one was about 20", all others were shorts. I'm going back tomorrow with my camera, I'm thinking after this cold snap the big ones are moving in. I tried the SBR in califon for an hour after RVR, no love there, its running painfully low.

Great report.
I've given up on Round Valley - or as I like to call it, "Skunk Valley".
In all the years I've fished the shore in the fall, I've had a 'few' days where the fishing was insane. The trout were gathered on the shoreline like hungry puppies waiting for me to throw my next piece of power bait to them.
I've had a few days where I caught a couple of under-sized trout and maybe a keeper.
And I've had the vast majority of days where I just got skunked and walked away dejected and feeling like I just wasted a good weekend afternoon.

Fall shoreline fishing at RV definitely has its ups and downs. My friend Zach had insane days there last October with fish every few minutes, on shiners under slip bobbers, and nothing on the powerbait. I however consistently caught trout there last November on powerbait, averaging 2-3 per trip. This October has been nothing like last October. I've gone a good 4-5 times already and have yet to get a trout under the bobber, only powerbait has been working. And aside from anthrax, I haven't heard of anyone having crazy days there this October. People have still been catching some big ones though, someone caught a 25" brown today and a 5lb bow yesterday, and last Sunday a guy got a trophy bow on a worm under the bobber. It's hit or miss right now I guess. I'm hoping November will be a better month in terms of more consistent action.

Sunday I fished 6am to 10am - had steady action throughout, finished with 5 browns, 1 bow and 2 lmb, missed as many as i caught. Biggest was a 17-18 inch brown, bow was 15", browns were14-14.5". bass were 10" and 13". Pics are the big brown, small lmb, larger lmb and a failed attempt to capture the bow, but I thought the pic was kinda cool anyways. Saw the big brown caught that cmoran mentioned. nice fish taken on a spinner. http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a561/anthrax2244/IMG_4791_zps93a64ea7.jpg

damn anthrax you're really picking the right times! Went there this morning again and didn't even get a nibble from a trout. I'm jealous man! Sounds like you're having the kinds of days my friend had last October
