They described the boat as a "very small plastic boat". I wonder if it was one of those ridiculous Coleman Crawdads I occasionally see out on the water.

Was reported the guy was in his eighties, never know may have been boating accident but may also have been something like a heart attack. My best friend lost his father in law on the raritan a long time ago.He was in a small boat and he did have a heart attack and died on the water. Anything can happen at any time but you need to have an enourmous amount of respect for the water because it does not forgive,

Guys, be careful at the Meet and Greet on Sunday....we were out on Hopatcong yesterday and it was Windy City like Chicago......this is just a tragic way to finish the season .....

He was not wearing a life preserver, according to Lt. Stephen Jones of the New Jersey State Police.
unfortunately, this is a common attribute of these fatal on-the water accidents :/

It probably had to do more with the fact that he's 80 and not the plastic boat. I fish from a Coleman crawdad and the thing is stable as can be and wouldn't want anything else

Try baling a big wave out of it by hand before the next one comes in the boat. Hope you have a real big GPH bilge pump. Even that sometimes can't empty the boat fast enough before it starts sinking.

Unless you launch on Hopatcong during a 'Nor Easter, I don't think you have too worry much about big waves. I fish the same lakes that Gatto fishes and I've fished them in 30 mph winds and haven't seen any "waves." I think it's a matter of knowing the limits of your craft. I have a 14-foot V-hull that's built like a tank and has a bilge. I have it rigged for electric only though and I stay on electric only lakes. Yet there are people who will launch a kayak in Round Valley in rough conditions. I doubt there were any waves on Farrington and as mentioned, I think this tragedy probably has much more to do with either the fact that he was 80 years old or not wearing a life-preserver.

Yea I could see that being a problem but like catfish said I don't fish anywhere where i have to worry about big waves. Or any waves at all for that matter. I stick to the smaller lakes and rivers like the Passaic , millstone and raritan. Been on Farrington countless times even in very high winds and never had a problem. I've wanted to get onto LH and GWL but I know the limits of my craft.

Well put Mark.

Live each day like it's your last because one day it will be.
