With water being released from Cannonsville, there was plenty of water in the West Branch for a float trip. My dad and I met up with our ace river guide Mike and were treated to ideal fishing conditions: clouds, fog, and stained water. We put in at Hale Eddy and immediately had action. In the first 30 minutes we already had about 10 trout in the boat, though nothing over 10 inches. I was soundly out-fishing Dad at that point, and we both thought the rout was on again. But he caught fire later and started getting the big ones. He landed an 18.5" rainbow, an 18.5" brown, a 17" rainbow, and a 16" brown. Meanwhile I landed one brown about 14", and the rest were <10" dinkers.
Fishing was much better in the morning. After the sun came out the bite really slowed; only 7 fish were caught between 1:00 and 5:30 when we pulled out at Hancock. All told we finished the day with 31 trout; 28 browns and 3 rainbows. Mike was awesome as usual, rowing his butt off to position the boat and help retrieve the occasional snagged lure. All fish came on metal. I turned a few big fish on plugs, but they wouldn't hook up. I suppose that, if anyone is going to out-fish me, it might as well be my dad. :)
