Think I overdid it this year....this is the entire wall in my classroom at Passaic High School, ready for the beginning of our Trout in The Classroom Project. We raise brook trout to fingerling size, then take a field trip to a selected stream and release them. My students also get a tour of the hatchery and a fishing experience down at the education pond. Enjoy...Capt. Dave:D

.
That's really awesome. We never did anything that cool when I was in high school.
Just one question. I used to be a big tropical fishkeeper. I was always under the impression that people don't keep trout in home aquariums because they require temperatures cooler than the ambient room temperature. is this true? Are hatchling trout better able to deal with higehr temps than older trout?

I have a chiller unit which keeps the water at 52 degrees F, the same temp that the eggs are kept at at the hatchery.....water will be a constant 52 right up until release in April....

Not busting balls in any way but, are your trout certified disease free ?
Just curious how that works, thanx.

There is an article in this months fly fisherman titled -Adopt a trout-TU's mentoring program takes students to the water....Will try to scan the article when i get home....
I'm not sure how long TU has had the the classroom program but i know its been for quite a long time....Being a member of TU since i was in my teens (now in my 30's) I remember trout in the classroom being a pretty big deal for TU back in the nineties....I still here a few things about it at monthly meetings but i'm not sure how wide spread the program is or how many classes participate....I do know that there are ALOT more participants out west where fly fishing for trout is and has been alot more popular than here in the east...Probably because of the world class trout waters that exist there and the fact that trout fishing is a VERY large part of there economy in the many hot spots.....
Maybe muskynut can elaborate on how long this program has existed....Thanks in advance:)

I'm into raising aquarium fish and was wondering that myself. I know it's illegal to release any hobby fish (even if of a stocked species) into any body of water, for reasons of disease. But, if there were a way to get them certified disease-free and legal to be released into certain waters, this would make raising a local species more interesting to me. I would love to be able to raise fingerling bass or pike in my 90g aquarium for a legal local release.
