I have been seeing alot of bait fish lately along the shore. Most of them are bowl of 5 ft in diameter and all over the place. But I hardly see any bass chasing after them. I have been catching bass in deep water (usually 60-80 yds away from the shore) but nothing near the shore.
Here's a question. When do bass start to come close to shore? When it becomes cooler? Maybe too much food and bass are too lazy to chase after them? Just waiting for baitfish to drop down to the bottom?

Just put on your dot gloves and the bass will leave their deep water haunts and find you on the shore.

Dot gloves stink to high heaven from catching all the bass. I retired them. :)

LM are usually the laziest fish when it comes to chasing bait balls. How deep is this lake u are fishing? if its fairly shallow the bass hang in the weeds or any shady area during high sun, they will usually be active at dawn an dusk and thru the night. If bait is in their face during midday they will eay, but they usually dont chase too far from their nose. If its a deeper lake, try winging a heavier worm or jig out there and bounce the bottom back or drag bottom, cooler water is good this time of year if theres some type of structure in the area.

Fish will move shallow on cloudy days and at night. They tend to stay deep on bright days, although the occasional random bass can always be seen chasing bait in the shallows.

You would be amazed how many fish are shallow sometimes the water is just barely over their backs. They hide in cover and like Lard said they come out to feed in the early am or pm. They are very difficult to catch unless they are on the feed. Most times they are waiting for a frog or sunfish to get just a little too close them then they explode on it! Alot of times you can tell if bass are near just by watching the baitfish and sunfish in the area or lack of them. As the temps drop they will get more aggresive. Realistically the best shallow bite is in the spring but they are there for most of the season.
