Went for an hour late this afternoon to the River ....got a few on topwater...nothing big but cool to get something on my new Legend Tournament 6'10 MXF rod.....So I 'm fishing and I look to my right like 10 feet away and see this guy....scared the crap outta me because he was so close and not afraid....so I grabbed my stuff together slowly making noise but he wouldn't go away!!.....by now it was gritting his teeth and really got me a bit worried it may have rabies....Got to my car and the fox followed me and was still hissing at me....I think it was possessed...thankfully I got away w/o any bites, tabies, or damage....Just be careful when you go there...you never know what you might see.....

looked like a top water bite until...a fox entered the picture. Great pictures!
The hunter turns to the hunted:eek: I have seen rabid skunks behave in a similar fashion. You played the right card...get the hell out of Dodge!

Nice fish and cool pics!! Def best to stay away from animals that are stalking you, lol.

I think I saw you over there. I was headed downstream around 6:30pm in the j boat? Glad you got a few. I had a decent night myself.......

See those sexy Foxes ing with Silver Fox consistently in the lower Passaic and up in the great swamp. They're everywhere by my work area, Berkley heights, Harding, Mendham, Millington, Stirling and surrounding towns. I wouldn't worry too much about them, there quite timid. I would be scarce of the other river critters, rats, raccoons and those critters that look like ferrets. Can't remember the name. Nice Smallies buddy!!!!

First of all foxes are primarily dawn/dusk hunters so any daylight activity is odd. Secondly they are very shy. An aggressive fox to me suggests its sick.

From Humane Society:

Signs of rabies in animals
In the “furious” form, wild animals may appear to be agitated, bite or snap at imaginary and real objects, and drool excessively. In the “dumb” form, wild animals may appear tame and seem to have no fear of humans.

There are other signs, such as the animal appearing excessively drunk or wobbly, circling, seeming partially paralyzed, disorientated, or self-mutilating. However, most of these signs can also be indicative of other diseases like distemper or lead poisoning. There are few behavioral signs that are telltale of rabies alone.

We have foxes in our area all the time...Had 5 kits born under our shed two years ago and 3 this year. They are fun to watch. It is true that they are primarily nocturnal but we see them all the time in the daylight so I wouldn't get concerned just based on that. A lot of people feed them because they are "cute". I'm thinking that one is probably fed by people a lot and he was looking for a free handout. As far as timid that's true but thay are very curious and if people have proved a non threat they get quite comfortable getting close. I hate when people treat anything wild like a pet.

I've also seen them stay just outside my fence (about 20 feet away) and drive my dog nuts...definitely playing with him. I like having them around because they take care of the vermin.....those I don't like.

But that last pic certainly makes your new friend look possessed for sure...HA!

That's awesome!

One of the greatest things about fishing,is all the other things you get to see when you are outdoors. We had a great thread going here last year once about stuff we've seen while fishing.

That being said, I would be concerned if I was approached by an aggressive fox, too. It's possible that the fox had become so habituated to people that he feels safe enough to get aggressive with people who wander into his territory.

Foxes can get extremely territorial - a friend of mine who lives in a residential neighborhood in Stirling came outside one morning and found the head of a rabbit on his front door step AND the head of a rabbit on his back door step. At first thinking it was one of his son's friends playing a joke, he came to realize he had a fox den in a hole in the ground in his back yard when he walked out to his shed and there was a fox. It hissed at him and followed him all the way back to the house. Crazy stuff....

LMAO.....seriously, the fox followed me to my car.......that last pic on the gravel lot was like over 100 feet away from where we first met(!).....as I was hurrying to my car it stayed with me.....I really wasn't in the mood to take any chances of getting rabies or whatever else.....Your comment was funny about the spinner.....I'm smiling ear to ear!! :)
