They were in a tuff spot right next door to Dicks Sporting Goods. Maybe they'll move more south closer to Rutherford/Secaucus.

I used to work up in that area and would find myself stopping in there at least once a week. I loved their staff, very knowledgeable and friendly. Hope it all works out for them. I might need to take a hike up there and help fund their relocation a.k.a. buy more rods that I don't need.

Dicks moved in to that anchor location a few years ago, and I saw the writing on the wall. Just brutal.

That being said, all their fishing tackle for the moment is 20% off I believe. I picked up a couple of rods last week.

I use to buy my worms there in the 60's.
Bought my first pair of Ray Bans there as well.
Well there is always Herman's...right?

And as for Dicks, they got dick for fishing stuff..especially rods

I worked there for a few years in the evenings -- very sad. I've lost contact with some of the folks there but when I lived in Bergen County I shopped there before the time I worked there and since. Again, very sad :( Hopefully they relocate to another location nearby!

I remember going there with my father when I was a kid, they even had batting cages in the back of the store in the 60's! unfortunatly they have turned into a clothing store instead of an outdoor store.

Sucks, they are a nice alternative to the "big box" stores we've become saturated with in Northern NJ.

They are supposedly relocating but haven't found a location yet. Hope they stick around.

Since we are reminiscing, does anyone remember Hermans ??

Back in the early 70s, while most kids were at Sam Goodies record stores buying 45s or at Spencers buying black light posters, I would be in Herman's drooling over fishing stuff. I can remember one particular visit like it was yesterday....

I found my first and still favorite higher end salt water fishing pole in the clearance rack but I was a few bucks short. I was so determined to have that pole, I hid it behind a bunch of stuff, went to a few fountains in the mall and "borrowed" $2 worth of change and went back to the store and picked up Black Beauty.

Man was I proud of that pole.

Woodbridge Mall Doc. As kids we'd actually WALK or even RIDE OUR BIKES to the mall... Can you believe that

Parents would probably be reported to DYFS if they let their kids do that today...

Man I'm sounding more and more like an old fart every day

Hermans was in the garden state plaza where old navy is now - that place was awesome. I also remember one being down this way, but can't remember the location??

The original Herman's was on Nassau Street in Lower Manhattan by City Hall. Old man Herman was always at the register !! I remember getting my Mitchell Garcia 406 there and pairing it with nice Conolon rod from Paragon Sporting Goods (still a great store on Union Square, but no more Fishing Dept :( ). I'd still have that setup and would be still using it if I didn't leave it in my friend's mom's car trunk in the early 70s. The car was stolen and the fishing stuff in the trunk was worth more than the car !!

The store directly across Nassau Street from Herman's had an even better fishing section - Spiegel's, but it was more expensive.

However the mecca for finding cheap fishing tackle was Job Lot Pushcart Trading Co., also downtown on Church Street. I would go there on my lunch break buy some tackle and when I went back later that day to get some more, they'd be sold out. You never knew what they'd have from one day to the next and it was dirt cheap.

Sorry for derailing the thread; I had a Senior moment

I think places like Herman's, Model's shot themselves in the foot by getting away from sporting goods and concentrating more on clothing & sports apparel. Sports Authority seems to be heading in the same direction. So far Dick's seems to be avoiding that pit fall.

Herman's was the place growing up in the 70's in Bergen Cty....Funny a guy I fished w/ in high school in the early 80's brother who worked at Herman's back then, went to Meltzer's when Herman's closed and still works at Meltzer's today.....

I used to work at The Sports Authority in Lawrenceville in the late 90's and spent a good portion of my paycheck there. A lot of my gear is from that time period, and met my wife there too. Anyway, since Dicks have been popping up all over the place I haven't been back to a TSA in years, it just seems like Dicks is a nicer shopping environment.

Stopped by there yesterday after work. They are quickly moving their inventory, but still a decent amount of fishing lures, rods, reels and some gear left for 20% off. I picked up a nice blade bait for jigging season, 12oz lead to keep my green light submerged and some terminal tackle.
