Was out last Saturday night fishing for Bows around 2:00 am..had a big time hit... took about 10 minutes to get a good look at what was on the other side of the 4 pound test...To my surprise I had the biggest American Eel I have every seen.. So we put her on ice and started to look for the nj state record found some information about Njs fresh water Eel record and it said that the record was 41 inches .. 6 plus pounds took her in and measure her she was a thick 36 inches ...We took her down and put her back into the water and let her go.....when we return home looked some more and found out the record is weight only......she was heavy but I will never no???? good time all around ..........

Thats pretty darn cool ! Best thing to do if you think you have a state record is to get weighed, of course. I have NJ Fishing Digests in my car, at work, at my computer desk and one next to the toilet. Great for reference in case you get "the big one" ! Find a certified scale in the middle of the night, no prob. Any supermarket that is open all hours will have a certified scale in the meat department, give the clerk a 20 if you have to to get back into the meat section if it is closed. 2 witnesses and the scale number and you are half way home. Bring it to a fisheries lab, say Pequest or the one by RV for an official ID. Taddah, you are officially in the books. OR, you can skip the fame (ala Saxmatt) and just let your big fish go.

I like the story, lake monsters !!

there's a lot of big Eels at RV, I bet people have caught a record numerous times and just didn't know it. Awesome that you may have beaten it anyway though!

Here's a big one I had a few weeks ago:

The current NJ State record eel, from RVR, is on the wall here @ The Freshwater Fish Lab.

It starred in the cult classic horror film: “The Eel that Ate Lebanon”.

In that photo,……..the eel was stiff,……..frozen solid.

I always thought that it looked like some kind of Samurai eel sword, & he, the Ninja Angler.

Sounds like some sort of old SNL sketch... Belushi's Samurai character as a fish monger.
