The trap that is set in a creek near work has been filling up.
So, this past weekend, tucked in waist deep, below a small flooded island in the high & muddy Big D for some cat fishing.
Using just the dad tails, on heavy tackle, landed a number of channel cats. Two surprises: 18” smallie & 24” striper.

Fish: suckers, flathead catfish......any rough fish / invasives we get from sampling.

Cool deal. I never used live crawfish much as bait because they are so prone to snagging on stuff on the bottom. Never tried fishing them dead, though.
Do you peel the shell off the tails so the meat is exposed or leave the shell on?

They stay alive, in a bait container in the fridge, for quite a while.
Baiting up on-stream,….brutal to some,…. I break off the thorax, head, & claws.
Hooking thru the bottom rear end of the tail, it pierces thru the hard top shell, securely.
The dangling walking legs,…..bookend the exposed flesh, juicily,…releasing enticing flavor buds!
Of course, a softee crawdad = primo bait! He goes on whole,…….as his entire body is releasing flavor buds.

Totally different ball of wax - and no use for cats - but the Senko crawfish in green or black have been working quite well this year. Bass will hit them on the fall, as you work them on-top through lily pads or twitched along on the bottom...
