At the Hackettstown Hatchery, staff have been busy with broodstock collecting. Chief Barno advised that
New Jersey will be providing Northern pike to Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. They had experienced problems with their program due to lake freezes, and the Hatchery had a surplus of fish that
they could provide. Additionally, tiger muskies have been sent to New York.

Muskies Inc was at the hatchery this past Saturday and Craig gave us a full tutorial of the northern pike, tiger musky and musky stocking program. We provide fish to other states, just as they have done for us in the past. It's reciprocal, no one charges anyone and Craig said he never knows when the day is going to come when he is going to have to make a phone call and ask for a favor. There is close to a MILLION 1-inch, pure strain muskies at Hackettstown right now, just as there was an overabundance of tiger muskies. Do you think we shoud stock all million muskies in Merrill Creek, or do you think we could spare a few to help out other states?

It's not unusual for hatcheries to trade fish.
A few years back I read an article in Fish & Wildlife Digest about one of the NJ hatcheries getting their Channel catfish from one of the states in the south. I think it was Arkansas. The water in the NJ hatchery was just too cold for what they were trying to do. I believe they traded the catfish for Walleye.

I know, it's just funny to read. We do have a surplus. Guess we got a good hatchery and staff :)

So, how many pike are goin to PA, CT, and NY? Also, I thought they were doing away with the tiger program?? Love to see some in the shed, Passaic, or monksville. :)

They did way with the Tiger program 4-6 years ago. That's why places like Furnace, lil Swartswood and a few other choice lakes have both Tigers and Pure strains. It was never totally gone, just at a pause, I guess!!!

I guess ONE large pike or muskie could carry upwards of 100,000 eggs.
Mix a little love juice....WHALA. Put em in a mason jar and drive them to NY.
