Another day another... clam ahaha Left the dock right after school at around 3:30. Within' 2 hours of fishing the lip and I boxed our 6 keepers and threw back 5 32 inch fish and then called it a day. Left them biting but that okay because tomorrows another day Biggest fish today was around 37 inches i believe. Not as many shorts today but this is also the incoming tide. I can't even imagine what the outgoing is like. Within' two minutes two rods went off and they the chaos started. as the lip was reeling up a fish, i noticed 2 fish to 3 fish following him him. Unbelievable. We were tripled up at one point. There is a reason that i am smiling in the pic for today. When one of the rods went off and i was fighting it, The lip moved my custom Johnny Bucktails" rod just resting on the side of the boat as it was in the water. Got the fish to the boat and as i was taking the hook out My jb rod went flying and so did I. I laid out completely and just barely managed to grab the butt of the rod as it was going over. i landed in between the engines and almost went in. Smacked my leg against the side of the boat but should be fine. My dad said i was fully extended and he thought i had no chance but never doubt me. Crazy day for the lip and I. The Jb rod lives another day to catch more fish. Would have had a lot of sleepless night and im not kidding ahahahaha. Back at it tomorrow, tight lines - Johnny Bucktails

and yes i am crazy.

ps: for all of you jealous internet fisherman out there who felt the need to tell me off over email and on the post that i should catch and release: just so your aware, 80 percent of the fish we catch is given away to either family, friends, and even our church. Whats wrong with keeping a LEGAL limit of fish that we are ALLOWED. Thats why there are regs. Case closed... hop off

what kind of setup do you use, if you don't mind me asking. Just interested in the rod/reel/line combo.

"in my younger days if i went offshore and it wasn't a total slaughter job, i was bummed out..."

Hmmm , jealousy with a little hypocracy on the side?

Excellent job again Johnny. By the way, well said in your opening post to the naysayers.

Ignore the above and try in the future to teach your children what you already know "follow the rules."

That is all you need do sir. Talk of "slaughters" in the past ignore the fact that there WERE NO LIMITS in the past. People keeping their limit when they are fortunate to get a limit is NOT what caused any previous issues with bass or any other fish on planet earth, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The issues in the past with fish were when there WERE NO LIMITS.

Enjoy your favorite past time to its fullest. One day pass that passion and knowledge along to those you love. And above all, NEVER let someone tell you that doing right is somehow "wrong" and perhaps you should not do that which you love in the LEGAL manner in which you love to do it.

(and if you ever have any fish you would like to give away my son and I are always hungry :D

So Dave if I charter your boat and go out and catch my limit of tuna it stripers or anything else that swims are you going to preach to me about keeping them?No you are going to take the.money with a smile and ask if I want to set another date to do of again. You will come on here and list that you had your charter out and limited out and it was a great trip.So I guess morals only apply to those that do not make there money from the sea.People make me laugh Fish&Game set bag limits so people can fish keep fish and not hurt stocks and a guy gets trashed for doing so.I know he is young but I would have to tell anyone that doesn't like it to kiss my Ass plain and simple.I say keep up the good work kid and dont let anyone tell you that doing something legal is wrong.

you miss my point, and yes when we go out on a charter i absolutely allow my customers to catch their limit. when i fish for fun, i release all my bass, and always have, when i fish offshore for fun, i take only what i can eat fresh, but that's all a personal decision. all i was trying to do was lend my personal opinion to a younger angler who certainly has a passion for the sport. if i knew it would turn into a side show i wouldn't have commented. also, i do believe that i said" i am guilty as the next guy" i have no issue what so ever with folks taking their limit of any species, and everyday if that is their preference, and yes we post all of our reports the good and the bad. please don't question my morals, if you ask around, you'll find out i have the highest set and i am one of the most standup guys you'll ever meet, that being said:

i'll be happy to remove my post, perhaps i should just keep my opinions to myself in the future, a lesson learned .. thank you

Nothing wrong with your post capt dave. For some the highlight of a fishing trip is on land when they post pics of there catch on the internet. Not directed towards johnny just speaking generally. Not to long ago a 30 was a trophy. And probably not to long from now it will be again.

What I see is a young dude totally phyched about the sport. I like eating bass and the smaller clam fish are much better eating than the bunker eaters any day. I say "fill the freezer and call the neighbors, the bass are on the chew".

Sometimes I trade for food too.

Her we go with another guy blaming the rec angler that it was all thee fault the bass declined.Had nothig to do with gill netters and foregin countrys coming into local waters.Just like whiting cod and everything else that rec guy get blamed for.Must be the rec guy beating on the bunker to not the big vaccume boats taking them by the tons. What about the thousand of tons of fish that don't come inside the 3 mile limit that we never get a shot at I guess they don't help the stock just the one we catch only coun: eek: . Capt Dave what I am saying is you take charges out that limit out all the time because you are a great Capt .But next you say that when you fish for fun you release all you catch or only keep what you can eat fresh. So you are saying if you get paid its ok but if you are not getting paid that you should catch and release for the future of the stock give me a break. How hypocrotical is that. And I can see if he was taking them home to feterlize the garden but he didnt. So I just don't get how people are bitching about a legal harvest like I said Noone get on the party boats with that smack talk why is that.

Capt. Dave , Key away ! The last time I checked this is a Forum . We all SHARE our information /opinions here . Someone has to mention that we have the OPTION to release fish . You don't have to clarify S^!+ to anyone . If someone has any problem with what anyone keys here then they should pm you with their problem or state in in a Grown up manner . Im sure the young man who started this thread took no offense and none was intended. I'm glad that he's catching them up . I'm a meat fisherman at heart but do practice catch and release on some species .

buckfin,

what i originally was trying to do was pay a nice compliment to a young angler. once again, yes, i allow and encourage for my charters to take all the fish they want, within the limits. we have on many many occasions crushed the longfin, in which has no limit, i often suggest to run away from them or stop fishing when i know we've taken more than our fair share. yes, if we can catch 18 yellowfin on a trip, and the customers want all 18 yes, we are returning with 18. if i chose to release my bass, with the silly notion that in some small way i am leaving a few for someone else.. perhaps johnny bucktails, that's my business. i'm leaving for 2 doubleheaders at colgate university in an hour with no access to a computer, if you need to bash me, have at. i'm hoping when i get back on monday this has since moved on..ketchum

Johnny Bucktails - You Rule/Rock Dude - You are only taking your legal limit - now with that being said this is an open forum and you will get opinions right wrong or indifferent. Take it with a grain of salt. Get it Salt - Salt water - try and stay with me here I aint right. Bleach and lead paint - it is the way we grew up and we liked it that way RRRRRRRR - I degress

You did nothing wrong but express your opinion , I am like you when it comes to my catch with what I fish for.

Now everyone has a right to there opinion with conservation , Bass - Fluke - Sea Bass - Ling - Steve Robins (ALS-Mako) and Skates -

The Kidd did nothing wrong and neither did anyone else - Captain Dave - JL sportfishing - I am not bashing you - you have a right to your opinion for conservation and everyone who agrees with you and the rest of us who have another opinion . You expressed yours and Buckfin expressed his and mine and so-one. That's it - simple - That is what makes our forum so great- respect everybody's opinions and views

Like Ol Pedro said " Capt. Dave , Key away ! The last time I checked this is a Forum . We all SHARE our information /opinions here . Someone has to mention that we have the OPTION to release fish . x 2 sir - I am just like you - don't catch as good as you but feel the same way -

Johhny Bucktails - Don't stop taking your legal limit - you are a fishing machine and I wish I was had the resources - lived where you lived and fished where you fished - once again friggin wife would not move over the g-damn raritan bridge

BTW - this is one of many opinions you will get in life/fishing - you like it great - you don't that is fine too - Everyone is different and has different views

Johhny Bucktails is not the only one who fishes like this and posting like this - How about the party and charter boats - personal catches - hit them up too and express your opinions to them also

Capt Dave no need to bash anyone but no need to talk two diffrent points either.I know you are a great capt no doubt but for someone that make part of his living from the sea I think you would have more respect for a angler that wants to go catch his limit just like one of your charters do.

If you think what Capt Dave wrote was a 'bashing' then you must bruise like a ripe banana....

In a very non-threatening and encouraging way he was simply suggesting a different point of view. Kind of ridiculous that his post is now deleted but all the others essentially bashing Capt Dave remain.... Doesn't exactly encourage an open discussion....just sayin'. Time will tell...
