So we went to Ramsey outdoors today and got out licences rods and reels. We did not go mad on gear at the moment as I can see us getting "hooked".
We ended up getting 6" 6" rods , 1 each, a nice little tackle box with plenty of trays, a load of lures of all different varieties and a few packs of the Fake worms.
The reels, we gave them a lot of thought, and because we knew we would want to get other gear in the future we did not go mad at this point I got a Saros 3000FA with 6lb line and my son got a Sedona 2500FD with 6lb line.
So we went to Darlington lake in Mahwah at about 5:00PM, we had driven by the lake on the way back from getting the fishing gear and a lovely guy advised us on how to tie the lures and how to present the worms. He gave us so o-rings as well which he said would stop the hook breaking the worm. I cant remember the method we used but it has a funny name, basically it was having the hook halfway along the worm.
Having really never done any lure fishing before we had a look at a couple of other people at the lake and the guy at the shop said we need to jig deep. We kind of had an idea but and after a little while and some common sense thinking I had the knack. I was basically letting the worm sink right down had jigging so i could actually feel the worm jump, make sense? This learning process took about 30 mins, but after that I could feel some inquiries from the fish.
Then i was into my first bass. I kept the rod high, it jumped, it got away. All part of the learning process, i then had another, kept the rod low, it fought, feisty little buggers, and I was no longer a Bass virgin. I got 3 in total.
My son was getting frustrated at this point. so I put my gear away and spent 10 mins with him just going through the process I had done. Within 5 mins he had his first bass, probably the biggest out of the lot.
It was a great first day. We are going to try some trout and bass tomorrow at Ramapo :) Cant wait.
