Fished it in Sept for salmon, I've only been able to catch small ones all under 12" by the drop offs. Gona try again soon and
Maybe go deeper and troll more. I get them on small spoons.

I've been curious of any salmon catches from Waywayanda also..They a really tough fish to try to establish in new waters..Also I wonder if NJ anglers can tell the difference between salmon and Brown Trout..They do tend to resemble each other..

Nah piece of cake..
Browns have more pigment... They have hues of gold, orange, brown, and red spots mixed with black.. they also have a LOT more spots than Salmon, especially below the lateral line.. Look at pictures.. landlocks have very few spots compared to a brown, and almost NO spots below the fishes lateral line..
Salmon are shiny silver and black, period.. Browns are much more,, well.. BROWN..
Silvery, with few spots on lower body= salmon
Brown/gold/silver with lots of black and red spots that extend to the belley area = brown trout... bob

FWIW - I caught a salmon at Aeroflex about 2 years ago. He was about 15" and hit a white rooster tail on a dipsy at about 20 feet deep. No pic since I wanted to get him back in the water and revived asap. I hear rare reports from YOJ Sports of people catching them there.

Bullet Bob: I agree in part on your color assement between the 2 species, Browns do have more pigmentation as far as spots go when freshly stocked..But catch a few that have held over a year or 2 and those beautiful red and blue spots have disapeared. They tend to silver outwith less black spots also..Salmon spots seem to have a more snow flake shape not often as round as the brown trout..But as I said earlier not all Jersey fisherman catch many hold over browns especially those that hold 2 or 3 years..But if just talking bout stockies I have to agree with you..

They are VERY similar....Mainly lake caught browns that have been in a given lake for yrs....Lake O browns are usually all silver unlike river browns....You may be onto something with the,, less spots below the lateral line....

I think catching a salmon from Waywayanda of any size is a prize there Birdman. They are a great sport fish, but seems its tough to get them started and keep growing..Hope thats a sign of better reults..Good luck in your quest this year..BTW when all else fails try one or 2 colors of lead core with some grey ghost, edsion tigers or black ghost streams..And if its not cold sweep troll them pretty fast....Tite lines Slider

sorry, guys, but I catch these fish all the time up here.. When you talk about "silver" brown trout, you are talking sea run, OR Great Lakes browns.. The finger lakes are huge, 40 mile long, 2 mile wide, 500 foot deep lakes.. I have caught MANY browns and salmon here.. Even though these are giant lakes, the Browns are NOT silvery like the salmon.. My last "big" brown was an 11 pounder, swimming in Seneca Lake for years most likely.. He was well colored with red and black spots and the typical goldish/brown color , and yes along with some silvery hues there as well.. Still had a lot of color compared to a landlock however.
I WILL agree with you that the "big water" sea runs and great lakes fish tend to be more silvery, but never once did I ever think a brown was a salmon or vice versa, even when I first moved here from NJ, in 1991.. The browns here keep much of their color even in LARGE sizes, UNLESS you are fishing lake ontario for 15-20 pounders...
They are similar yes, but the browns are not as bright silver as the landlocked Atlantics, and always have more and smaller spots that cover more of the body than the landlocks... oh, and if it jumps a lot its a landlock.. Browns do jump, but landlocks jump wildly, and a lot higher than browns do... They are great at throwing heavy lures right back in your face too... bob

Bob: You live in the Finger Lakes region?? Man I'm envious..Finger Lakes have been on one of my places to fish lists for years. never made it there..Now after some 50 years of chasing trout and salmon in lakes and reserviors, time catching up with me...Catskill reserviors, Adirondack lakes George, Schroon and Champlain from both NY &VT sides, God some much water so little time..Listen Bob one day down the road you wouldn't mind if i picked your brain as to a decent charter capt up there on Seneca or Cayuga that u'd recomend. Well lets see how this year plays out..Have a good season BOB Lots of tite lines Slider

yes .. Candor between Ithaca and Binghamton.. Fishing is ok here, but unless you are pretty sharp, its all deep water trolling, or side planer in spring..
Its all right if you like fishing in 125 FOW for 2-3 pound fish, from a moving boat.. Not my cup of tea... I usually deep jig, and catch a lot of lakers that way.. For landlocks and browns I cast in spring ,or flat line troll with light tackle.. Once those fish go down deep, I fish for other stuff, like perch or bass. I don't do as well as the big charters with 8 rods out, riggers and planers out, but I do ok... Cayuga has a severe lamprey problem these days, and the trout and salmon are being decimated.. Some fish have 2 or 3 eels on them,, Its a mess, and the fishing is not that good any more.. Not like it used to be.. Seneca has lampreys as well, but not as bad... We also have the Susquehanna river close by, decent walleyes and smallmouths, but lots of dead zones there as well, as this part of the river is very muddy.. The pennsylvania part of the river is better.
Fishing is better in rocky bottom areas... Yes, there are some nice fish here, but I see the NJ reports daily, and I would trade my lovely log home on 3 acres for a fixer upper in NJ, any day of the week. The salt water fishing is world class, and Jersey has VERY good fresh water as well with truly great fisheries management.. The only fish we have here that aren't easy to get in jersey are salmon... Yes we have a lot more water, but when you are up here you realize its not all its cracked up to be.. All the management money goes to the salmon in the Great Lakes, and you need a big boat up there...
Our local streams are stocked with tiny yearling trout, 7-9 inches.. Jersey stocks 2 year old 11-13 inches...
I dunno, I live here, but fish NJ as often as I can.. The Finger Lakes look nice, but when a lake is 400 miles long, 2 miles wide and 500 feet deep, there is a LOT of dead water.. The guys that catch a lot of trout here, troll deep all day, and burn a ton of gas... Few years back I was talking to a mate on the Dauntless.. He had gone fishing for lakers on Seneca,, He wasn't impressed.. Neither am I... bob

Keep in touch,, I can get you some salmon/browns in April and May, thats the time to get them, before they scatter deep.. Mostly trolling rebels or rapalas.. Got a couple of boats that can handle the Fingers. [They get rough as hell]..
Later on, in summer I have some good spots to deep jig for lakers... just PM me, and I'd be happy to take you fishing up here one day.. Most charters here just do down rigger trolling except for one guide and he's VERY good.. His name is John Gaulke... He casts, jigs and fly fishes, and his clients DO catch fish... bob

Boy I'll say Landlocks jump..I think they the gymnast of the fishing world..Although in the spring of the year browns put on a pretty good show especially the ones that are from 18 to about 22 inches..Bigger guys have a tendency to bull dog more and dig deep but when a 8 or 9 pounder crashes the top and comes leaping out of the water hang on its some sight..

I will agree.. jersey has exceptional fresh water fishing considering the size limitations of the lakes compared to NY..
NJ has good fisheries management.. FAR better than we have here in NY.

Guys I say God bless our state of New Jersey..They do a terrific job maintaining water ways and lakes ponds with their efforts..Very diversified state to fish in..What makes it special is the states size, easy to get to your favorite fishing hole without a lot of driving time....But I don't believe it can compete with all the waters available in New York state....I'm talking fresh water now not slat water I'm not a salt water guy..thing that makes NY a difficult state is it's huge size..Its so spread out..But it offers tons of great fishing if one does his research b4 going up there. Lots of great fishing being missed by Jersey guys..But like I always say..So much water so little time.. Tite lines guys..Slider

They tried to get the state to do that, back a number of years ago when salmon took hold in lake Ontario, Kings and Cohos where running up the salmon the black and many other tribs..Jersey anglers hoped for the same thing on the Delaware..But a number of things came into play to stop it..As i remember low water situation in the fall when salmon run was one..Meaning tough in not impossible to launch by trailer..Then the carcasses littering the banks would be a problem..Cost was big..Any way the idea got squashed..
