Idk how anyone can chance ice in NJ. I dont think we had one single day this winter below 20 degrees or not to many days in a row below freezing.
The worst part is that you are chancing Tue guys life who has to go out there and save your dumb ass.
Common sense boys.

Being on the ice in the evening when you not sure of the thickness is definetly not having any common sense. We were there yesterday and the was probably fifty people on the ice between fisherman, ice skaters and and at least a dozen ice boats. Unforfunately it happened and my prayers go out to all involved as i've nearly drowned ice fishing many years ago and learned from that experience. The ice was in decent condition and appeared to be about four inches which is safe to be on. Where they experienced ice fisherman or just a group of people on the ice that ended up in a bad situation?

Unfortuantely this does not look good. Apparently two teens fell through the ice well after dark. The search is now suspended.

Looks like this is now a recovery operation... 2 -14 year old kids missing... heartbreaking.
I fell through the ice on a small pond when I was about 12-13. I was alone. Lucky for me, the water in that spot was only 3 -4 feet deep, and I made it out alive.. I am 58 years old, and will never go out on lake/pond ice again as long as I live. I don't need the fish that badly..
I see these stories all the time here in NY state, several a year. The ice here isn't even good so far this year, and NJ is a lot warmer than here... Its simply not worth going out on the ice on a big deep lake... My heart goes out to the poor parents of those kids.. I simply cannot imagine what the past day was like for them... bob

Saw on nj.com that they pulled one of the bodies from the lake today. What a shame...condolences to the kid's family and please be safe this year everybody if you are going to venture out on the ice.

Unless its like 20 below and there is 3 feet of ice, my ice fishing days are over! Did it a couple times and it was never too much fun anyways.

it is really sad that this happened, but there is a BIG difference between a couple 14 year old kids out on the ice and ice fishermen who carry self rescue equipment and know what is safe and what is not. ice fishing is safe.

News 12 just reported two teenager boys deceased and one adult injured.
Sad. My condolences to the familys who have lost loved ones.
They interviewed one of the fathers who said he acepted the loss however i dont think the actual shock has set in yet.
Remember no ice is safe, never. The next few days will be over 40 pushing into the mid 50's. Spend this weekend home not on the ice.

I agree, its not safe enough to be out on the ice of any body of water in NJ

You would not catch my A$$ on any "frozen" pond at any time, unless conditions permitted. I have never ice-fished as I grew up in the South and it was never a consideration. While I may be missing out on something good in NJ, I thinK avoiding this problem is worth it. My 2cents...and your 5cents may suggest otherwise I know...just saying
