Hit up a local pond for the evening bite today. I was hoping to have some fun with panfish on a fly rod, but I brought my spinning gear to hedge my bets because I am the worst fly fisherman in the history of the world.
Things started off well, as I landed a fat bluegill after a few casts. Then I promptly lost a hopper fly and a popping bug in the same tree branch on consecutive casts. Worst. Fly fisherman. Ever. To make matters worse the wind kicked up. Since it's hard enough to fly cast in the wind when you actually know what you're doing, I decided to put the long rod away and break out the spinning tackle.
Over the course of the next hour or so, I caught nine bass in the 6-10 inch range. Two crashed a buzzbait, and the rest hit a senko. Every bass came from almost the exact same spot. The senko bite was weird; nothing for several minutes, then I got four in a row. Then nothing for a while, and then three in a row.
Lots of young of the year sunnies in the shallows. I guess I know what the bass are feeding on. Had my camera with me, but nothing picture worthy today.
