Hit the river for a few hours tonight. Went targeting catfish but had an hour or two to kill before the sun went down so I started tossin the usuals. After a half hour or so I caught a decent white perch. Then I hooked into a nice beast of a pike!! Took a couple runs that had the drag rippin!!!

After a quick cpr I decided to catch a sunny or two and get the catfishin underway. With a live sunny on one rod and chic livers on the other it was a parade of 3/4# bullheads for the next 30min till I saw the other rod start giving line. Grab it, set the hook , and bring in a sunny almost bit in half! Couldn't hook up, Damn........

Little while later, with a sunny strip on the hook, I saw my pole bend in half and hook into what must have been a solid channel. He was pulling line and thrashing like beast!! After about 8-10 minutes I thought he was done so I tightened up the drag to try to land him and he takes off, SNAP!!! Oh well, ill get him next time........

Off the water by 10:30.

Nice Pike. :)

So you think that Bullhead bit off the sunny that way? Could it be yellow perch?

I'm thinkin big channel or possibly a pike. Although, there may be more damage if it was a pike. Makes me mad lookin at it. It looks like the first 3/4 of the fish was in the mouth, but the hook was too far back by the tail. So, I prob yanked it right out its mouth.

Or a pike or some other fish attacked from the tail side? :)

I thought I ripped the tail by setting the hook, but lookin again, the hook stayed firm. Maybe ur right, attacked from behind.

Also kinda sucks that, in an attemp to not cause injury to whatever it was by waiting to long to set, I didn't wait long enough and missed em all together. That's fishing......

Good feeesh. I've landed a million White Perch in my lifetime, but all of them have come on the Hackensack River and not the Passaic.

I've hit white perch sporadically in previous years in the passaic but that was my first this year (check it off the list, lol). Usually much smaller than that one too.

PASSAIC RIVER MONSTERS!!! LOL.......

Anything that eats em. LM Bass, cats, pike, pickerel............Although, I never caught anything on one, lol. Had a pickerel take one I was reeling in once, but, after an interesting battle, I lost him.

Seems hard to hook up with them.
