What's the best setup for using a lure? As in, should I be using a leader, just a swivel, nothing? I've really only used live bait when fishing but sucked it up and bought a couple of rapala lures and a spinner today. And I'm shooting for bass if that matters.

I assume your referring to freshwater, if I have an outfit heavier than 12# test I would use a leader, or yes, steel if for pike, but I am a fireline fan for fresh water , minus trout, so I do a top shot of 10 or 12 pound fluoro over my mainline, unless Fishin the lillies, good luck bro!

I've been trying combinations. For years I always used a swivel but this year I've been hooked lures right to the string. If you're fishing for Pike with a bigger lure and heavier line then a leader might be a good idea. For bass, they don't seem bothered by a swivel and 6 or 8 lb line should be fine. Heck, you can catch bass with 4 lb line but I started using heavier line due to snags in rivers like the Passaic and Raritan.

Ok cool thanks for the help. Im only using 6# so I think I'm just gonna stick with a small swivel.

Use the swivel with the spinner but don't use it with the Rapala.

Tie the Rapala knot: http://www.animatedknots.com/rapala/index.php

Retrieve slowly, just so you feel the lure "working", & you'll catch a variety

of fish. I do,..........with 6 lb. test & a # 9 floating rainbow trout Rapala!

TM: When fishing spinners almost a must to use swivels..this will prevent line twist..With Rappalas or other type crank baits tying direct is good, but to start try a small snap not a snap swivel, makes changing lures easier, but remeber not large snaps smallsnaps, your local tackle dealer can help you on that. Good luck out there ...Slider
