Wilson and I on the Big D first thing this mornin'. Water was high from a release way upstream but it was very clear.
Back to my "go to" lure, a junkie plain silver and black Rapala knock off, got me a brook trout. Wilson and I tried various stuff and had a few follows.
Ran over to the PA. side for a bit and I got a nice chunky smallmouth on my 1st cast. I wanted the Big D trifecta but I couldn't connect with a walleye.
Packed up and headed to the lower South Branch, water was low and gin clear. At one spot we saw a couple of fish that Wilson swears were carp, I think he proved himself wrong when he nailed a huge smallmouth on a Panther Martin. Bounced that stretch for a bit and the wind was brutal, bagged out shortly after 1pm.
I was downstream when Wilson got the big smallie, he'll give ya the details I'm sure.

Big Smalley, but not a great fighter:confused:. Andy measured my rod from the butt end up and we compared it to the pix. The circles indicate 21 inches.
We figure the fish was 20 inches at least. Hefted like 5 lbs.
One of the biggest SMB I ever caught.
Frosty in the early going with iced up guides.
Warmed up a bit then the wind started a blowin.
The way this winter has gone we will be in the dog days of summer by June:eek:

Nice catch fellas!! Just watched a show recently about fishing for prespawn male smallies. You can tell by the red upper lip. Maybe thats why he didn't fight much, used all his energy nest building.

Nice fish guys,Wilson what reel is that?
My new Daiwa Fuego - Cabelas 50th anniversary model.
Just got it on my last trip out to Cabelas. Smoother then a baby's bottom, and the drag is the best I ever experienced.
As a matter of fact that bass was the first fish caught with it.
The rod is a fenwick HMX 6'/6" medium light, also very nice... when the guides aren't frozen up;)
