Those sea-run browns have been making a fool of me for too long. Saturday morning I'm going to the Manasquan River with my entire tackle box, and I'm not going home until I catch one of those silver bastards!

I would give it a week or two. I've been there every weekend for the past three months and it just keeps getting higher and more muddy. I'm going to wait for a week without rain before I go back. Thats just my opinion. Good luck if you decide to go.

You want the beginning of falling water after a rain storm. Rain causes fish to run upstream from the tidal areas. Low and clear is impossible fishing other the at night or right around dusk or dawn.

Good luck with that losing wish. You love that mudhole! The Muddysquan River. What a sorry ass excuse for a trout stream.
The only reason it's stocked is because the state wants to sell more licenses in that area. The same reason all the storm and street run-off pond waters in the parks are stocked in northern/central N.J. Got to purchase a license and trout stamp to fish them. Then all the trout die anyway when the water temperature gets too high. What a waste of money. Lots of money. I don't feel the amount made on licenses in those areas is no way near what it cost to raise, transport and stock the trout.
I saw you caught some nice fish the last few months in REAL trout streams. Surprised you're not going back to those streams which proved productive for you.
Maybe Doug can join you. Give him a call. I'm going ling fishing. Been doing real well. If you can join me, send me a pm.

Seems like the general consensus is a lack of enthusiasm for my endeavor. Can't say I blame anyone; it is a horrible river. But it is close to where I live, and I'd love to see one of those mythical fish up close. I figure Saturday will be my best chance. Water will be coming down after the rain Friday, and there should be fish in the river to spawn. I'll be fishing the stretch between Hospital Road and Brice Park. I'm thinking firetiger Rapalas will be the ticket with the muddy water, but I'll bring spinners and jigs, too.

This is the last straw; if I don't get one Saturday I'll probably stop trying and then focus on something that will get better results. Like sasquatch hunting.

Hey Craig,

Maybe if you give up on the sea-runs you can start hunting landlocked salmon in Aeroflex and Wayway. At least your chances will be a LITTLE better.

Hey Craig,

Maybe if you give up on the sea-runs you can start hunting landlocked salmon in Aeroflex and Wayway. At least your chances will be a LITTLE better. You're right about that. At least with Aero/Wayway there are nowhere for the fish to go, and no big stripers or blues at an inlet to eat them. But whatever. At this point, I've had just as much luck trying to catch the lake monster out of Champlain.

Lard, maybe I'll join ya! My ex caught one a couple years back on a nightcrawler in Nov in the 195 area. I printed out a map and marked exactly where it was, so I'll try and dig it up. I'll shoot you a PM with my number if you're looking for company

They are there but you have to fish at the right time, relatively muddy high water best when falling and clearing slightly. Also need to be willing to fish any bait, plugs, spinners, salmon eggs, egg sacks, worms, etc. These are essentially wild fish and are not usually in the feeding mood on this run, so it is hard to get bites. But they are large and powerful, not lazy hatchery fish that tend to just roll around when hooked.

Your wrong on this one Cuz.Many people who cant afford travel to "real" trout streams and young anglers without transportation need these urban ponds.I"ve fished pristine Canadian waters ,Key West, and other exotic places but still enjoy fishing the local pond.I also believe almost all the trout are caught before the weather kills them.

I second that one...its a great way to relax for a few hours before/after work and close to home...and you be suprised what you can get in your own backyard.

Just got back. Met Outofline at Hospital Road at 8:00. We walked all the way to the Parkway bridges and fished our way back. The only thing around were the small stocker browns. Outofline caught a few on crawlers, I didn't get any. He had to be out of there at 1:00, I stuck it out another hour. Fished back to Hospital Road, nada. Of course, that wasn't before the river claimed about $30 of my lures, 50 yds of line, and the face of my reel spool. Talked to a guy there that says he has been fishing the river for 12 years, and has caught ONE sea-run.

That's two guys giving it their best effort for nearly six hours, and nothing to show for it. Outofline says he missed a fish that was taking drag, so that may have been the only sign of sea-runs. Then again, it may have been a sucker. I'm not impressed by the fishery at all. I'll probably fish the Manasquan again, but I won't be targeting sea-runs. If I catch one, it will be dumb luck.

I'm beat. I'm going to take a nap now. :(

You fished the worst part of the day for sea runs, very early and very late, unless it is very cloudy. Also what bait did you try other than lures?
