For all you ice fishermen that may have never seen one these before,Had some gift cards to burn from cabelas, and didnt really need anything so I ordered a automatic tip up. Figured ahh give it a shot.it's got a rod holder you put the rod in it and bend the rod over hook the trigger setup on the eye of the rod wen the fish pulls it pulls trigger setup down and sets the hook and it's fish on pretty neat little gadget, check it out

I used them fishing with Eric Hataaja out in Milwaukee Harbor for giant trout. They are awesome....like a tip up but you battle the fish on rod and reel. From the Midwest. Just be careful because some states outlaw devices that sets the hook for you....check with NJ Fish and Game before using. Capt. Dave

There is nothing to check, these devices are legal in the state. I have used them for 2 years now and had my rigs checked by Fish & Game not a peep from them. I love watching the float run up and tripping the rod, its a ice bound mouse trap! Too bad ice is in short supply.

I remember reading something to the effect that such devices could not be used....I snooped around and found out that prior to 2009 one could not use a device that set the hook automatically but Fish and Game has since then removed this regulation from the digest.

Its clear you have not seen one in action! Its 100% easier on the fish, the fish doesn't have a chance to gut hook itself making releasing much easier on the fish.

Truth be told. The guys over at Ice Shanty pushed this through and the State finally approved it. It is better to get a quick hook set than to gut hook, if it favors the fish I'm all for it. It's one of those things, if you don't like it, don't use it, much like a fly rod.

Legal now that freespooling isn't required but you need to use circle hooks. There also called slammers and tipdows. There better then tipups for panfish because you get fewer drops. Backside is 4 of them take up alot of space on your sled.
