The burbot (Lota lota) is the only gadiform (cod-like) fish inhabiting freshwaters. It is also known as mariah, the lawyer, and (misleadingly) eelpout. It is closely related to the marine common ling and the cusk. It is the only member of the genus Lota.

According to Wikipedia:
It is most common in streams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stream) and lakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake) of North America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America) and Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) above 40°N latitude (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40th_parallel_north). They are fairly common in Lake Erie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Erie) but are also found in the other Great Lakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes).
