pulling your boat?

how many plan on pulling your boat for the storm?
considering...i'm in the back bay - not concerned about wind - but more about rainfall


thoughts?

Not going to pull the boat, but if it looks like we are going to take a direct hit I will run up the hudson river and ride it out up there. The problem that I see at my marina, is with the new moon on Monday and surge that could possibly come in..... our docks will float over the tops of the pilings.....

Atlantic Highlands Marina, in their infinite wisdom, says if you want out it has to be today. Sounds like they're trying to beat the rush.
A hurricane storm surge combined with a new moon or near new moon flood could mean an epic disaster there.

I think with this storm coinciding with the new moon, surge may be the greatest danger.. I live about 100mi from the boat in Keansburg, so the floodgate that protects Waackaak creek is a great comfort at times like this..With the surge taken out of the equation by the gate, I'd rather ride it out in the slip rather than risk getting blown off blocks in the parking lot.. I know Lentze's has open slips and is used to hosting transients looking to hide out from the storms.. so maybe an option for some in the RB area looking for a safe place to ride it out.. good luck to everyone and be safe!

My boat is being hauled out today. i am playing it safe.
Why risk it for a couple hundred bucks....
stay home an extra week or two make up the money...

The problem I have in Keyport is that if we do get a really big surge, even if I am up on blocks there is a good chance that the water will come up that high and float the boat.

Will ride it out at the marina if she heads a little east or go for a ride upstate if were going to get slammed.

Take the drain plug out. It will stay on the craddle. Mine did when that happened. :)

Two winters ago when we had that big NE blow a local marina lost about 6-8 boats that floated off of the blocking with the plugs out.... I don't want to take that chance.

Thanks Ted. If everything gets wiped out, I think I may replace the boat with a Deli. That way I wouldn't have time to think about fishing again !!:p

pulling tommorow, im at manasquan river club, very protected but i just dont trust the slide bar for the rings on the floating dock. will store at the marina on my trailer, no trees to fall there, but wide open.

Exactly!!!If you pull your boat and chock it you may be worse off.The boats will float off the chocks and hit each other.I leave mine in and tie extra lines.Been thru many hurricanes in my life time and learned thru experience.

I have a real concern with the sunday morning high tide. Im in shark river just west of the rail road bridge. High tide is 7:30 AM and the storm should be just about due east of us at that point. Im leavin my boat in. Good floating docks....double up some lines...more fenders. Even thinking about sleeping on the boat Sat night for shits and giggles.

Hauling Legacy. I rode out several storms in Great Kills Harbor and watched boats sink at the dock and sailboats break off moorings and crash into boats at the adjacent dock in 40-60 knot winds. If this storm goes 60-75 knots there will be major issues in my harbor. Add in the new moon tides and you've got even more trouble.

I've had the boat for 13 seasons and hope to have it for 30 more.

Boat is sitting 20' in the air on a rack. Rack comes down, BOAT US mails me a nice check that should cover my party boat fares for the next 15-20 years.

Just got back from double lining in Seaview marina. I have never pulled for a storm in the past 40 years. Much easier on floating docks than it use to be on fixed docks.
Make sure you have enough lines, 2nd line should just have a little more play than your 1st line. As 1st stretches 2nd picks up to help.

looks like im screwed.....trailer needs tires dont have enough time to replace , the marinas by me are only pulling customers, my marina sucks cant get ahold of anyone , im a half mile from ocean, fixed pier docks , wife doesnt want me to go cause shes affaid . so oh well i guess ill triple line it and hope for the best ....gonna go on insurance website and make sure policy is up to date ......

My wife is in the insurance industry. She was authorized to pay half the cost of haul out to any insured that wanted it.

After a decade of salvages- some thoughts...

Your biggest concern is it get stuck under a fixed dock in a rising tide and sunk that way.

Engineer that and you've probably have it beat 99%.

Also which direction are your scupper pointed? Into the oncoming seas or not? If you plug scuppers open a hatch to let it drain to bilge and not accumulate.

Check the tide schedule. Remember ALL this is still tidal. Know when it's the highest. That's your concenn

Also your neighbors. The guy in the next door slip cheaps it out and bashes the hell out of your boat. Check that out possibility too.

Remember the winds are coming essential from one direction. Focus on that quarter or side of the boat.

If practical drop your canvas/windows. That's what catches the wind.

I'd get a lot of liquor & food and ride it out with the old lady.

Good read on this thread. I'm in KMB. I was going to pull it out but couldn't decide where to put it. I live close to the marina, but bringing it home is not an option since I'm more concerned of a tree falling on it by my house (not to mention on my house).

After reading these posts, I'm doubling double up, take the top down and clear the deck, put out more fenders, and hope for the best.
