Been trying out round valley night fishing for rainbow trout we mark fish and are fishing in 45 foot of water using night crawlers for bait with sinkers about 1 foot above hook with a number 8 hook ? Noticed that alot of people are using geen or white light in the water to attract fish.. is there an advantage to using one?... should we be using Hi rigs so the bait is off the bottom ? could someone please set us in the right direction ....................

What pound test line are you using?

Glad you posted, nice seeing you on the big lake.

Stop looking at your fish finder, use it to locate water depth and double anchor, 2 weeks ago 45 ft. was the hot number. (you know where)

Turn off the fish finder once you anchor up, no need to look at, turn on some tunes and kick back.

Drop a crawler or a ball of Velveeta or a chunk of cooked shrimp to the bottom then reel up a couple of feet. BAIT.......and.......WAIT, that's all you can do. Don't get discouraged !!! You like many others put a few trips under their belts before connecting.

I think the under water light started out more to draw in herring and fish for lunker browns at night, then it carried over to night rainbow fishing. The bright light I have may draw some shrimp into the area (the rainbows are feeding on them) I like the light because it lights up the area from underneath and I don't have a bright light shining in my face all night, plus it lights up the rod tips just enough so I can see when I get a hit.

I don't think line pound test really matters at night, just don't use Power Pro or the likes.

Keep at, it's simple, don't give up. Always check the weather BEFORE heading out, you don't want to get stuck out there in a nasty thunderstorm

et.... Always check the weather BEFORE heading out, you don't want to get stuck out there in a nasty thunderstorm

That is for sure.....got caught once over in Rangers Cove. It's a long way back on a 36lb thrust trolling motor when that wind kicks across there and the white caps are a plenty.

Agree on the light more to attract the bait....and I think it opens up the opportunity to catch something else if the bows aren't cooperating. Caught a nice LM once while doing the night light thing. We were using herring as well as worms that night.

My buddy and I will be fishing it tonight shooting for big bass. We'll be using artificials mostly. Maybe pick up some sunnies for the bait if artificials aren't working.

Just read an article 5 minutes ago in the In-Fisherman about lunker bass fishing at night in the summer. It was really interesting. It pretty-much just confirmed what I already knew about bass behavior in the summer, but it was amazing to see to what degree. It was based on an extensive study and showed how tagged, lunker bass would sit in 20-feet of water and not touch bait hung in front of them for 8 hours, but the second dusk came, the fish would move from the deeper water and cruise along weedlines and lily pads looking for bait the entire evening. Really cool stuff. Good luck!!!
