View Full Version : Non-Political Wind Farm Question……

Didn’t want to interrupt the pissing match that you guys were having in the now locked thread with an actual fishing question.
Has anyone been out to the area the bases are built? See them first hand? How long have they been up? What are they constructed of? On Navionics I see it’s between 75 and 120 FOW. Guessing it’s gotta hold seabass for sure and possibly a Mahi hopping zone? What’s the security going to be in the area? Limited access or not?

Only liberal mahi mahi will frequent the wind towers, and they've changed their preferred pronouns to just Mahi. Repeating it only reenforces the patriarchy.
The sea bass will abound but, as I'm sure you know, sea bass are "protogynous hermaphrodites" meaning they are solidly in the LGBTQ camp and will probably change their preferred pronouns to "Rainbow Grouper". Parades and pageants are expected but will be tremendously confusing even to the participants.
Food should be plentiful as the turbine blades grind up sea birds like a massive cuisinart in the sky and shower the surrounding area with fresh meat.
Sharks are expected to be rampant but fishing for them will be strictly prohibited as the lawyers on the ASMFC wanted to express some professional courtesy.
Hope this helps! :D

Did they actually get as far as installing the supports?.. I was not aware of that.. If so, thats a win/win, as long as there is access..No windmills, but lots of iron structure to draw life?.. I would think that would be welcomed by most fishermen...

They put up 54 monopilings but no turbines yet.

If they are imbedded, I imagine they are already drawing sea life around them.. They are really just 30 foot across iron pipes driven into the sea floor, but they will attract life of course.. Might be interesting to see if they get any play from guys that know where they are located...

They're petty easy to find since they show up on the latest Navionics and Garmin charts and I'd bet they do hold fish... Pretty sure the area was closed to fishing during construction but not sure about now or what the future holds...

I will forever refer to Cbass as Rainbow Grouper now 🤣
Back to the original question…..from what I could google the bases rise to about 12 feet above the water and located between the two shipping channels leading into NYH. I’m guessing no one here has been out to the area?
Happy New Year to ya all.

I'm guessing that before seabass show up bait like mussels etc. will have to build up in the area?

I haven't been out there and I don't know anyone who has. Any sort of structure, barnacles or not, is going to attract and hold fish. I've caught fish under floating mylar balloons and pallets. Will it be better once the the barnacles form up and you get a little ecosystem going on, for sure but they're still worth checking out. My question is will we be allowed to fish them?

The bases are 73’ above the water .
If completed the turbines would be 800’ higher than that

lots of horror on this forum for past few years concerning how the wind farms would destroy the bottom, ruin the fishing etc.. I don't like wind towers, think they are ridiculous, but always knew what would happen if they were put up.. You would have good fishing for pelagics well within the range of small boaters, no need for $500 a man offshore charters.. Takes a few years, but anywhere large structures are placed in the open ocean, they bases become infested with fish, both bottom species, as well as pelagics.. I never really understood the fear here regarding the "destruction of the fishery", but did understand the fact that they were close to worthless in other areas, especially when it came to actually producing enough electricity to make them worthwhile.. If those huge bases are now in the water, it won't be long before NY/NJ fishermen will be enjoying similar fishing to what these guys are enjoying. I don't really know much about how far they got, but if the bases are in and all other construction has stopped, you guys in NJ will be in great shape.. Its only a theory of mine, but I would imagine this area would get fished pretty hard of course, but would take some pressure off other productive areas, leaving better fishing all around. It will be interesting to see how this proceeds in the next few years,, Perhaps the supporting structure is there, in place on bottom, but the 800 foot high wind towers are never put up.. In my unscientific opinion it might become the most productive fishing area in the NY Bight.. Be nice for a guy with an 18 footer to be able to run 1/2 hour out at daybreak and catch some mahi and tuna, top it off with some big sea bass and be back at the ramp by noon... bob

I think a lot of the initial fear came from the disruptions from the survey and soundings which coincided in whale death and strandings. Add to that potential hazards to navigation, suspicious high cost government subsides and in many cases leading to higher energy costs.
As mentioned before, there might be a place for these wind turbines but 20 miles offshore is not one of them.

Probably get there in a rowboat . They start 23 miles off the corner of the hook and go 14 miles from there .

Depends on the boat and captain of course. A well equipped modern 18-20 with good electronics, marine communication, weather apps, etc?.. I would have no problem going out with that, depending on the boat owner.. A guy that knows what he's doing?.. no problem.. Guy that just bought the rig and is getting used to it??.. not a chance.. The small boats and electronics today are so much better than they were in my day. Sea Tow memberships as well.. I think you will see a lot of sub 20 footers 20 miles out if there are tuna/mahi/sharks etc around those supports.. Yes, probably some undergunned fools out there as well , but I give a lot of credit to todays boats and boaters compared to 30 years ago.
