They're ok reels. Van staal look but nowhere near van staal quality. I use a 6000 size with a tuna popping rod to haul grouper off the skyway pier in tampa.

I used a gen 1 4000 sized striper fishing a few years back and it was cooked after about 15 fish. It was back bay, not oceanside so it wasn't getting sandy, etc. It was literally smoked lol.

When you say”cooked” what is meant by that?

It sounded like a coffee grinder and the handle wouldn't turn. The guts of the reel were toast. Metal shavings galore when it was opened up.

I should state that I was given the reels at no cost. The gen 2s on grouper worked ok. I plan to use a 6000 this summer to put it thru the throes of tuna popping. They hold a ton of #50 braid like max quattro

Since they were used or given to you I guess you made out ok were you able to have them repaired? and reused? If you had the $ would you buy one new or the Van Stall even though the Van Stall's are more $ I just recently saw Tsunami now have a "coated" version of the SaltX2, which right up there with the VS's, I'am looking to buy my last reel LOL that will last me for the rest of my fishing days your thoughts will help thanks

They were unused, brand new.

If you're looking to buy your "last reel", go with the VS. Hands down, zero comparison. And not the VR... bite the bullet and get the VS-X. Or splurge for the Visser if you can swing the price.
