Reel Suggestions

Looking for reel suggestions to pair with Shimano Trevala PX Medium for spinning and baitcasting rods? Something light but strong. I am planning on using both set ups for fluke / sea bass trips in northeast.

Anything would fit the bill for your request. Shimano torium 14 or 16, Accurate tern 300, or Avet sxj or sx for overhead reels. Spinning you have the daiwa bg, Shimano spheros and the tsunami evict to just name a few. It would also depend on what your budget is.

For spinning Daiwa BG if you're on a budget or a 3000 Ballistic if you're not.

For the baitcasting Daiwa Lexa HD since it has a power handle and metal gears

I recently bought a Penn fathom 400 baitcaster as well and it's nice and smooth but pricey, has a power handle but it's a bit on the heavy side and does not balance well with some my light weight rods so a bit on the clumsy side for that application. I would think the 300 would be a better choice for a lighter rods but they don't come with the power handle.

WHATEVER YOU DO MAKE SURE AND MOUNT THE REELS ON YOUR RODS AND SEE HOW THEY BALANCE. This is especially important with the bait caster because they sit on top of the rod and taller and heavier ones want to fall over to the bottom and you need to work to keep the reel upright.

The 300 fathom LP is def the better reel suited for what we fluke and blackfish with .
Power handles are readily available for all those reels in all shapes , sizes and knob configurations .

The 400 is great for throwing top waters and big Shad’s etc for striper fishing , as it has the set back spool .

What size Diawa BG are you talking about ?

The BGs run a little bit larger than the Balistics so I'd say the 2500. The 3000 is not much bigger so you can go that way if you feel it balances with your rod better. For this reason, I would bring your rod with you and mount the reels to see which balances the best.

Daiwa BGs, BG MQs, Back Bays, Ballistic along with the Shimano Stradic are nice fluke spinning reels.

I’ll also agree with the Daiwa Lexa 300 for baitcasting.

That being said, bring the rods to your local tackle shop and try several reels on each rod and see what balances best & feels good to you.
