Headed north with a fine crew of anglers from here. Myself, Luke, Scott, Big Fonz, Nick, Brandon, Chris and Duane rented a beautiful house on Oneida lake with primo access to the Walleye grounds. Arrived Friday to 50 mph wind gusts out of the NW and still forced ourselves to get on the ice to check it out. Bad idea, the conditions were brutal. Back to the house to eat, relax and prepare for Saturday morning.
We head out early and get set up. Flags weren’t flying but we had a good pick of Perch and Walleye for the annual Sunday night fish fry. Some guys did way better then others but everyone contributed! Without fish there wouldn’t be a fish fry. Saturday night got a little nuts at the house but boys will be boys. Nothing better then Poker and adult beverages with the bros!
Sunday back on the grounds with a stiff W wind that switched to NW in the afternoon and gave us a good taste of that lake effect madness. I didn’t have my shanty properly pinned and almost flew away to Long Island with the 50 mph wind gusts that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Had to hold the shanty down with one hand while sticking a few more spikes in it to prevent myself and my gear from flying away. Good times!!! On this day the Walleye chewed and chewed. By days end I had 23 Walleye, 8 keepers, 15 shorts and 2 jumbo Perch. It was nuts. All this out of 1 hole in my shanty. The fish Gods were very giving. Plenty of fish caught by quite a few of the guys in the frozen tundra. Good fishing everyone and phenom times had by all. Can’t wait to do it again next year!!! TIGHT LINEZ and FISH for all!!!

That perch looks like it belongs in the Macy's day parade! What a toad....jeez! Nice fish and good group of guys even if mother nature was a bit blustery. If you've never experienced lake effect bands, it's quite an experience. Amazing how weather and winds can change so drastically within seconds.

Oneida gives up more fish through the ice than it does in open water some years.. Like all these huge lakes up here, its always crazy windy, and you can go up a dozen times and fish in raging whitecaps each time, if you can get a boat out at all!.. Very nice catch, many locals don't even do that well.. Its a gigantic lake at 21 miles long and 5 miles wide, and the fish are not everywhere... Very nice catch you guys made!

Oh man!! What a trip...so jealous. Out of what town did you guys launch? We were there bout a month n half ago.. apparently the wrong side of the lake for early ice. Constantia NY. Nothing in NJ compares to the beast that Oneida is. The weather will humble you! The walking and walking n walking to get to a spot is relentless.
Made men of us and made us appreciate our smaller NJ bodies of water. We struck out with walleye completely in 4 days and picked away at some fatty perch here n there. Any hints for nxt year? We are going back no doubt. Oneida is an amazing sight n experience. I need to get my boys on some EYES!!

typically you need input from locals,,, the lake is immense and the fish are not everywhere all the time.. Not sure if the OP and his crew fished blind, but if so, they are simply amazing. they had one of the best catches of hard water walleyes I have ever seen in 30 years of living in NY state.. Believe me, its just not that easy most of the time... Lots of time and effort needed for most ice fishermen on oneida....

if you had hard bottom deeper than 10ft with perch around, i'd say you could've been in a decent spot for them. did you mark any and they just wouldn't bite? I think we caught most of our fish 15-30ft depth hard bottom jigging, very few on tip ups. I was there earlier in the week as well with the same deal pretty much at a different area of the lake. find some points or humps with a contour map in that depth range.
also, beware, there are random gas holes in the ice every year and if they get snow blown over them, they just become trap doors that you will go right through if you walk over them.

Fun weekend for sure! We fished south shore, Canastota..All you gotta do is check your Navionics and find the structure. It takes some walking but once you get on some contours, drill in, hunker down and pound em. Bites came in flurries this time around. Huge thanks to this crew for all the cooking they did! We ate, drank, and fished like kings!

Great Trip and even better company!
Day 1 - Slow pick for me but I managed to get my limit at the buzzer. Gave myself to 6:30 before I had to go and cook up the pulled pork dinner for the crew. I landed the last fish at 6:29!

Day 2 - I was the first one out and should have just setup the shanty rather than bouncing around. It took 3 of us to pin down/setup the shanty in 15mph winds. I have never experienced those lake effect squalls before but I swear I saw a wampa from the Planet Hoth streak across the lake. Had to deal with Chrisper in my shanty the whole day singing some stupid song from Home Alone 2 (his favorite movie btw) but we caught a bunch of quality fish.
