Well opted to wait for the SCA to expire and met at the dock at 9am, nice to sleep in. Got everything set and pushed off for our usual grounds about a mile from my mark I see oil on the deck below the helm. Rut Ro! After a short diagnostic I had to make the call to head back to the dock. I carry all the safety gear, life raft,epirb,ect.. but this time of year is not to be taking a chance. By the time I got back to the dock I barely had steering capabilities. Cold weather F#@ks with everything. We had a good tog season, one my personal best. Lots of limits and good quality fish. We found some good spots that holds quality fish and will return. Good luck to all!! FH

That's what they make Sea Tow for. LOL
Timing was perfect and no one hurt or things damaged.
We get that on the tow boats from time to time. If you remove the cap on the top of the steering wheel shaft you can see inside. As long as that rotating metal scoop piece is covered you're fine. Keep it filled. When you let air into the system you will get no resistance dead spots steering. Eventually NO STEERING. The air has to bled out just like car brake lines.
Carry a squeeze bottle of hydraulic steering fluid on the boat.
Its a very light weight oil. A squeeze bottle makes it easier to get the stuff in that tiny fill hole on a rocking boat.
Have a safe, albeit boring, winter Capt.
