To say it’s been an interesting year is an understatement! Sheeesh! This year needs to die and the sooner the better. Lol! Let’s brighten life up a bit with your best catches of the year or your favorite fishing memory of 2020! Show me the fish please!
I’ll start off by saying 2020 was the year I fished the least. Between work and my young athletes baseball career this year flew by. I didn’t have much time but when I fished I caught. Consistency, consistency! The catching that sticks out the most is early season Stripers on the Raritan river in March and early April! I’m out there wading the river with my ultra lite St. Croix spooled with 5lb. PP and 10lb. Flouro leader when the The fish with Stripes start blitzing on top. Man, they were boiling on this day. Caught quite a few shorts and keepers and 1 beast around 20 lbs. I thought my rod was going to explode and the Stradic was making noises ive never heard. Not sure how I got those fish in with that current and light line. It was nuts! TIGHT LINEZ FELLAS! I hope you are all well! :D

My most memorable trip of 2020 was a carp trip I did up in Connecticut in May. I camped out for a few days and got a 39.13, a pb 28.5lb two tone, a mirror, a fantail and a bunch of other big commons. My buddy Chris drove up from NJ and fished for a day with me and landed his 2nd biggest carp ever at 35lbs and his first fantail. Our 4 biggest carp combined for over 139lbs. It was one of the best carp trips I’ve ever had.

I did minimal sweetwater fishing this year. Had walleyes up to 27" on the river and some smallies, plus a pretty good run of spring stripes. I spent most of my time getting salty. Back bay stripers in the early spring, back bay fluking once the season opened, a handful of offshore tuna trips and one inshore bluefin trip this past May. Finished the open water season with solid tog action in our inlets and canals on jigs w fish up to 20" and scored some tasty winter flounder limits with fish up to 16.5".
My memorable catches were the 5+ lb largemouth I nailed while crappie jigging in March on 2 lb test and a 1/64th jig and the 60" bluefin I decked in May. I actually herniated a disc in my lower back on that fish. The 3 to 5' seas, faulty belt and harness (wasnt mine or fitted properly) and the power of the fish did a number on me. As payback I plated epic tartare and sushi turning it in bluefin poo. I win lol. Pics below.
Caught a lot of variety but no beasts in 2020. Oh, and I had the 'Rona. That sucked majorly...

Looking back on the year, I didn't catch a whole lot of big fish. I did, however, have my best weekend of fishing ever on the Raritan River, catching schoolie stripers and walleye on Saturday, then landing what would wind up being my biggest smallie of the year on Sunday. That was the pinnacle of the season, but I did have a few other memorable catches, like what might have been the biggest largemouth I've ever caught in NJ, what might have been the biggest crappie I've ever caught anywhere, and an accidental carp while trying to learn how to fish a Ned rig on light tackle. I also finally christened the kayak with some fish slime.
Spent numerous weekends at my new cabin as well. Fishing was solid, but I haven't figured out the really big ones yet. Now that I finally have a boat up there, I'll hit it hard next year and unlock its secrets.

What I love about this post is that it brings out the best of the best and some of NJ’s finest anglers! Awesome stuff here!
Saxmatt those are some beautiful Carp brother. Crazy size to them as well. Hoping to see you in the ice this year in NJ! It’s been too long!
Jigman! It’s been a rough year and I’m happy your still here! That Tuna is a beauty! Looks great on the plate and absolutely delicious. An eye for an eye! A Tuna breaks a persons back, the Tuna dies! It’s that simple! Lol! See you out there somewhere hopefully!
Lard! I watch your videos when they come out! Your passion for this is unmatched! This year was tough but you always seem to find something to catch! Congrats again on the house up in PA! That story has so much meaning most wouldn’t get it unless they watched the video!
Hopefully we get more posts on the thread! It definitely brightened my day! Thanks again fellas and TIGHT LINEZ!!!:D

I broke a few PBs and new species this year.
But my favorite moments this year were regardless of the fish caught,
My vacation to the Adirondacks and experiencing the sh!tshow of the Salmon River for the first time were definitely big highlights.
Another special moment was scoping up two pike at once; the larger one would not let go of the smaller one I hooked :p
It's pure joy fishing and sharing moments with all of you!

Applied for 9 NJ Skillful Angler Recognition Awards . Two fish are on the leaderboard. Won 53 awards. Caught, tagged and released a spinner shark on an Ava A-17 in Manasquan Inlet the same day that I landed a 30 lb cownose ray in September. Caught 2,388 fish in 230 NJ freshwater fishing trips and 168 fish in 67 NJ salt water fishing trips. Tagged 128 fish. One was recaptured.

No big fish this year but that's okay.
Float trips on the South Holston river as well as the Smith and Watagua. Fished the Mithchell, South river and Jackson river in North Carolina and Virginia. Doing lots of exploring and seeing new things. Hope 2021 finds everyone safe and well :)

I had some good times fishing a private lake with Brian during the spring and summer, my biggest bass at 20 inches. My son came with us a few times, his biggest pickerel at 25 inches. I thought my son & I wouldn't get out on LH to troll hybrids, because of COVID in May, but turns out we did, though each of us only got hit by hybrids. Once apiece. So we tired for bass and caught five apiece, including a 20-incher for me. The most memorable outing was with my brother Rick. We put one of my canoes on the SB. I was nervous as hell at first, because I had 10,000 bucks in camera gear in that canoe, which was tippy, and my brother is a little cavalier. I felt reduced to PLEAING with him to be CAREFUL. But soon I felt OK. We brought only fly gear and we caught smallies. We paddled about five miles, and it just felt really, really special, like we had found the REAL world. It was a rite of passage between the two of us, down into the heart of Central Jersey.

Forgot all about Florida! We went in January. That's a red grouper and a jack crevalle. Can't find the photo of the 18-pound king mackerel, but that was a great fish. Definitely was the stand-out trip of the year. Rented a 22.5 foot center console three days.

I love this thread every year. This year had a few firsts and PBs. In the spring I nailed a feisty 24 inch Delaware River shad from shore, a mark I’ve hit a handful of times but can never seem to break through. This one went ballistic when I hooked it before I even started cranking the reel, with 5 acrobatic jumps completely out of the water.

Followed that up with my first fly-caught bluefish from a friend’s boat. Caught bigger ones that day but this was still my favorite.

And landed my biggest ice-fishing-caught pike through the ice this year also. Taped out to 29 inches and fat.

Did far less saltwater fishing than I in the past due to COVID, but still managed some stripers, bluefin and yellowfin tuna, and my first NJ king mackerel.
I suppose my best catch of the year was this wild brown, close to 27 inches, from a NJ stream. Been looking for one like this for a long time across multiple states. To catch it in NJ made it extra special. Followed by 2 other NJ wilds measuring 24 and 23 inches from this spring.

Some real good guys with some awesome fish on here. I’m glad I was there to witness a few of these. 2020 was a shit year but I made the best of it. Fishing was ok... started the spring off with the usual crappie bite and did well on all the trips. Walleye and hybrids at night on the big pond that was kinda crappy for me this year. Played with the stocked trout in the streams and did well, and got a little salty with the stripers in the bay and did very well. Soon the raritan river came to life and I got a few stripers from there and then did the valley fishing for trophy trout and got a few good ones. Soon it was summer and I played with hybrids and did good early season but the bite went to crap quick with the algae bloom. Got up to Ontario with the mamba and laid the smack down with big laker browns and salmon. Then soon back up there in the river with boys for salmon and steelhead season. Rounded out the year jiggin some walleye and the start of ice season is here now upon us. The year ended good for me with my little buddy Finn here so it looks like the year is ending on a good note hope we can start it the same way. https://i.postimg.cc/GB2xPv3K/158-CF3-C7-E5-BD-4-C1-D-87-A5-76-BD694-D77-FE.jpg (https://postimg.cc/GB2xPv3K) https://i.postimg.cc/Yjgfxr75/62-BBF521-6-AA7-4967-8-A77-E626-F7130-EC7.jpg (https://postimg.cc/Yjgfxr75) https://i.postimg.cc/F7Ncg0DS/559-E2879-C6-BA-423-C-AE97-F59485-B39104.jpg (https://postimg.cc/sMfYy5Wz)https://i.postimg.cc/sMfYy5Wz/5410519-C-7894-4661-A9-E7-B836-AD11-E871.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZBN3jcG8/A3-CB2-F05-C6-D4-49-B0-BBC7-7-C9-AB1-FAFF2-D.jpg (https://postimg.cc/ZBN3jcG8) https://i.postimg.cc/N9R9R0Xb/75-E09-D19-53-EC-435-E-B9-FC-A2-A885-A56-FB6.jpg (https://postimg.cc/N9R9R0Xb) https://i.postimg.cc/0Kx6nqdv/5-B3402-F9-A132-4650-A1-B6-A6-ECB37-BCAC1.jpg (https://postimg.cc/0Kx6nqdv) https://i.postimg.cc/4mW5Y8sy/2-B25-EFBB-958-F-43-A8-A26-E-91-FC7-E44-FC2-E.jpg (https://postimg.cc/4mW5Y8sy)

I remember that Lahanton cutthroat. You must have caught it about the time we went to Florida. Now I remember reading a really compelling essay about lake cutthroats in one of the fly fishing magazines. It might have been Lahanton, if I spell that correctly. I can't place how many years ago I read it, but within the past decade, i think.
Very nice to stroll (scroll) through the stories and pictures of the year's catches. I know everyone says this was a bad year, but I figure so long as you're alive, why put the kibosh on it? Many Americans are gone, true, and it's horrible, but why give in to it altogether? We prevail because we find what's good despite the bad.

Great catches as always by the NJ Fishing members.
2020 was a great year fishing wise for me. Started off with a monster bucket mouth during the 4 day ice season. During the lockdown I had my hours cut and I was out every day on the big pond in the yak trying to forget the world was ending. Once I could get the boat on the lake we hit the night ops pretty hard catching eyeballs and hybrids. NY opened up just in time for my annual 2 week vacation chasing brownies in Lake George. Spent the summer and early fall targeting pike, lakers and harassing bass. November had to be my best month of fishing ever catching a monster smallmouth, PB hybrid, PB laker, and PB Crappie all within 10 days of each other.
All in all I caught 7 NJ Skillful Angler fish (6 different species), qualifying for the Master Angler Award and the Bass Slam.

The most memorable fish hands down is the Lake Trout I caught aboard the Essential in early November. We got to the lake at sunup to troll, after 4 hours of nothing switched over to blading, after 2 hours of nothing we switched to jigging. They were being picky as all hell and I started to doze off staring at the fish finder. After almost dropping my rod in the water I told Chris to wake me up when they start biting and curled up in a little ball sucking my thumb in front of the boat. After an 8 minute power nap I get woken up by Chris saying he was on. I jumped up to net his fish, then proceeded to shoot a 5 hour energy, drop my jig to the bottom, and hook up with something huge! The fish made multiple runs to the bottom and put the drag to the test. When it was finally in the net Chris mumbles in a defeated low voice "It's #$%^& huge dude". The fish taped out at 33" and is the biggest lake trout that Chris or I have ever seen in person. If your only going to catch one fish all day I guess this is the fish you want!

You guys make Jersey look good! Some cool posts in this thread, nice catches too! I've definitely had a lot of memorable moments this year on all different waters. Starting with and following through the whole year was any & all the action I got on my popper I made from a piece of driftwood from the river. Was able to get 5 different species on it so far so that was pretty cool.
And besides all the work I put into the river, the clean-ups and reaping the benefits of it, the better moments with catches pinned to them weren't from my lines.
First, would be from berry season on the river with Tunanut and company. We got to see a few carp with a few handfuls of all natural bait and watched as his son wrangled up a couple bottom feeders. Was pretty awesome seeing how excited it was for him. By request, he stays incognito as he hunts down your spots!

Another great moment has to have been when a friend & I found a spot from google maps to look for some bass or whatever was biting. While tossing some lures he hooks into a beautiful musky outta nowhere! It was more exciting for the fact that this was not at all the target species and was his 1st esox other than some pickeral! Despite the year and what came with it, it was a pretty great year for me! Tight lines and Happy New Year fellaz!!

Wow, Some pretty amazing fish caught in 2020 both in and out of NJ!
This is a great thread.
2020 was not my best fishing year, but it wasn’t my worst. The wife and 4 kids keep my fishing to mostly short solo trips, some family trips and some short trips where I try to bring one of the little ones at a time.
The spring consisted of a few trips to the sbr and nbr for trout. Nothing big, but lots of action. This transitioned into quick trips to the Raritan and D&R canal chucking meat for whatever was willing to bite. Mainly walleye and smallmouth with a few channels cats. The 1st trip to the canal in late April, was a heartbreaker. My buddy and I were at our 1st spot of the morning. I was livelining a rather large baitfish. My line stopped, I gave a little tug to free the “snag”. I felt a Little resistance, maybe a little head shake and set hard. My rod bent sharply And I didn’t feel much of any movement....for a moment...just enough time for me to consider that I’m probably stuck on a large branch....Then my drag started singing as the fish took, peeling line as it shot upstream. It felt every bit as strong and heavy as the 20-30lb carp I’ve caught but with more head shakes. It tired after a few minutes of head shakes and bulldog runs up and down the canal. It finally came to the surface and I couldn’t believe that #1 it was a musky and #2 it was close to 4’ long, if it wasn’t. My buddy reached the net down and as he did, it rolled Away from us and out of the reach of the net and it cut the line in the process. And that was that. I was lucky that it didn’t cut my 12lb Berkeley xt mono leader sooner. I’m glad I was able to see it, but it still haunts me.
I Caught a decent northern pike the next weekend (My first) out of the river and also got a few nice walleye up to 24” and smallmouth through the spring.
May was a hot time for carp. My buddy and I were dialed in on a local Raritan River trib doing quick trips and catching 8-20 lbers.
During the summer it was game on for channel cats. Nothing huge but 20-24” were the norm. Got a few nice smallmouth as well and some decent crappies.
Fall was kind of a bust aside from a monster Pb lmb that I was not expecting. It was a good fight on my 5’ UL with 4lb test trout rod. Took my son to shore fish RVR many weekends and we only caught 1 rainbow. It
Was great to get the quality time in together and the fish would have just been a bonus.

2020, the year everyone lost their damn mind and i fished more than ever before... started off with the shortest ice season I've ever encountered (yes even shorter than this one we just had haha) followed by a few local trout outings and a carping session with saxmatt.
early in the year, I upgraded the tincan by buying a bigger princecraft and with the help of njsquatch and mikeytopaz, got it ready to fish the crap out of NJ. I promptly named it 'The Essential' so that no government nonsense could stop me from fishing!
Multispecies mayhem ensued throughout the year, with some of the more memorable catches being the first musky on one of my first trips in the new boat at the 'closing bell'; some xl landlocked salmon; night walleyes and hybrids; beefy bass and panfish; pretty much stalked most species NJ has to offer, especially the deep dwelling lakers!
I didn't do as much saltwater fishing as usual, but did take a trip to cape cod late summer to bag a huge bf tuna with my high school buddies! probably the memory that will stand out the most for the year!
Happy new year and i'm going for more of the same in 2021!

All things considered, 2020 was a great year fishing wise!
Caught multiple PBs with the most memorable being a 38" pike, 29" laker, 23" largemouth, 20" brown from a creek that's less than 6 feet wide, and a brookie that we hiked about a mile up a mountain with the canoe to catch.
Some of the highlights include a trip down to Florida for peacock bass and clown knifefish back in February, first time hitting the night bite, first time flathead fishing, first time fishing for salmon and steelhead, exploring a bunch of new water close to home, fishing with new and old friends, overnight camping/fishing trips with the guys, and ice fishing for the first time.
My favorite trips this year definitely were our trip up to the Adirondacks and hitting the salmon river for the first time. I'm addicted now and can't wait to get back up there :D
A big thank you to everyone who helped make these great moments possible!
Happy New Year and Tight Lines in 2021!

2020 man..glad it's over, but lookin through this thread makes me think there will always be good memories of a prior year to anyone that shares our passion. I had a good year fishing wise.
Some memorable catches, some PB's and some firsts.
Spring rolled in and i spent some nights on the big pond. I had some good nights with a mess of wallys and my PB Hybrid taped at 26".

I did limited inshore stuff but had a few worthy trips boxing some warm water species. Got a PB trigger. Didn't measure it, i just ate it.

Spent a weekend on the LBI surf throwing big baits and hooked up with all kinds of critters. Had a hell of a time landing anything but I did get this sand tiger to the beach. A first for me.

A crazy thing happened late summer going into fall where Monksville turned on like I've never experienced. I had many afternoons where I boated 8 or 9 eyes. A few double digit evenings when i had someone else with me. Good sized fish up to 26" with zero skunkings!

We had a great couple weekends up in salmon country with some of the NJF veterans and some youngins that kicked my ass on the river. I did connect with my my first ever fish on the fly rod and my first ever coho. No steel for me yet but it'll come..

Late fall/early winter i spent more time jigging the bigger lakes where the walleye bite was on fire and ended the year with nice muskie.

I picked up a completely rotted out 16' Sea Nymph on trailer for nothing a couple years ago. I ended up completely gutting it, worked on it off and on and finally got it mostly restored. She was first launched end of September and I think i've worked out most of the bugs. Keep an eye out for the Bacon Strip!
